Edinburgh underground streets
« on: August 03, 2016, 09:43:25 AM »
One of the things I have always wanted to see after a work colleague told me about it.

http://www.realmarykingsclose.com/about-mary-kings-close/about-the-close.aspx

Has anyone here been?

What was it like?

Are there any places you've always wanted to go, or any you really enjoyed?

I read about the Hellfire Club when I was 12 or so Rose.  A book did the rounds at school.  It was scary, murky and fascinating!  Sir Francis Dashwood, Bute and Sandwich et all, nasty, kinky lot.

Always thought Medmenham Abbey (hope I've spelt that correctly) was in High Wycombe, not West Wickham.  W Wickham is not far from me.

Fascinating stuff but I wouldn't want to see it.

However the Edinburgh link looks quite pleasantly interesting.  I've been to Edinburgh but not there.

I've always wanted to go to Lindisfarne, I really fancy that.  Not likely to get there now.

Another place is Downe House, I'll get there shortly as it is less than half an hour's drive from me (& I only recently found that out  :-[).

Places I love include lots of villages, towns and beaches in Norfolk.  Holkham Beach with its seven miles of sand is beautiful.  Walsingham is quaintly English with its shrines and legends.  I was always happy holidaying in Norfolk.

West Wickham isn't that far from me takes me a couple of hours. :)

I'm still exploring the east coast. Cromer, Walton on the naze, clacton.

Mersea island I quite like, we go to a rally there most years.

I'm more familiar with the West Country, but am gradually exploring the East Coast  :)

There is something very unspoilt about much of East Anglia, it has a charm all of its own.  Then there are the birds of course, the seals and the beautiful skyline.  I know it very well but haven't been there for a long time.  My husband's firm is up there and he works four days a week.

The Hellfire Club was in High Wycombe, not West Wickham which is Kent.  Didn't know U woz so near!  You've probably been to Downe House, unlike me who never knew it was virtually on the doorstep until recently - typical of me.

We spent six years in East Anglia, it isn't my favourite part of the UK, too flat and uninteresting. I like our part of Wales, where we can see the mountains from our home.

Reading Floo's somewhat negative comments about East Anglia reminded me of a conversation I had years ago with someone who complained that Lincolnshire was boring because it was flat. I replied they obviously hadn't been to the right parts of Lincolnshire because the wolds are beautiful. More info here:

I love this part of the world.

Yes of course it does depend on where you live.  Noel Coward famously said that Norfolk was flat.  I can say in all honesty it is one of the most unspoilt and beautiful regions of the country and I have been all over, or nearly.  I know and like parts of Wales.  Devon, Dorset, Cornwall, the IoW - Yorkshire is amazing!  However Norfolk gets my vote every time.  The best, most relaxing and charming holidays I've ever had have been there and that's coming from someone who doesn't generally care for holidays.

I like cycling, so flat is good, mountains bad, very bad.

Oh nowhere near you now I know you are not near West Wickham.  I should have thought of "Wycombe", now you've said it, it seems famililar.

Charles Darwin lived with wife and family at Down House (sorry, no 'e', my mistake), which is at Downe (with an 'e') in Kent.  Not far into Kent though, near Bromley/Westerham/Biggin Hill.  Here it is:

(Nigel Farage lives at Downe - frequents a pub in the village too.  Might bump into him if I go there.)

I used to have a work colleague called Lyn Dashwood - her husband was supposed to be descended from Sir Francis.

Oh that was me Steve but I don't generally advertise my Hellfire connections so please be more discreet in future.  Dash it!   ;)

Rose,  I will go back and change the Down House/Johnny Rotten link immediately !!!
