The usual stuff: Mrs G (the best thing that ever happened to me), family, health, security and good friends along with intellectual stimulation (be it conversation, literature, this place, music etc etc).

Then there is personal stuff like deliberately embarrassing my grandchildren, riding fast motorcycles, the Fender Telecaster guitar, horses running around in circles and, of course, the seemingly endless pleasure to be had from just moaning about all the stuff I don't like.

It makes me giggle when my kids tell me what a senile old bat I am, and they are still considering which cliff to chuck me off when I get even more senile that I am now. It is great that I can have that sort of fun relationship with them.  I could never have enjoyed that sort of joke with my own mother, who was quick to take offense at any supposed slight, even when none was intended.

I have to go with you there Floo, my immediate family are extremely rude to me for most of the time in a similar way your family is to you and I wouldn't want it otherwise, I have been known to be polite to them in return but very seldom; I love em all to bits.

I guess this has something to do with spelling, fine, the problem is how many times do I have to put up my hand about how poor my spelling is, be surprised when I post anything without a spelling mistake, my spelling has never improved since I was a young lad I'm now 74, what do you think prospects are for me getting any better than I am now at spelling H H?

Spell check runs hot whenever I write anything and I still manage to let the odd one get away you'll always get the occasional prat that thinks it's of paramount importance which of course it is when writing a legal document but something is telling me that's not being done anywhere here on this forum.

Like I said be surprised when I get the spelling right, otherwise go join the Foreign Office.

Well. The EU enriches my life. I have a second home in another EU country and I enjoy life in two wonderful places.

What Cameron's folly has emphasised is the narrow-minded, self-obsessed, bigoted nationalism that still exists. If nothing else, the EU symbolises the shared cultural heritage which exists in the relatively small area which has given us Shakespeare, Michelangelo, Mozart, Newton, Pasteur, Cervantes, Van Dyke, Beethoven, Galileo, Rodin ... to name only a few.

The EU emphasises our closeness and encourages us to perceive our neighbours as our friends. The EU has removed the threat of conflict by giving us common purpose. We are richer - in every true sense - by being members of a community. And now the small-minded want to take this away.

A paradox is that - if the age-related voting pattern was accurately described - the process of exiting the EU will be so prolonged that by the time the remnants of the UK leave the union that most of the elderly  Brexiters will be dead and the action may no longer represent any genuine majority of those who voted in the referendum.

I hope that Teflon Dave is aware of the real damage his stupid attempt to keep the Conservative Party under control has done.

I generally agree with your integrative sentiments.....but there are lots of cultural issues here that cannot be wished away. You are thinking of the EU in such fond terms because you share a common history and culture.... to a large extent. 

How about integrating with the Middle East, Russia, China, India, North Africa and so on?  May not be very palatable....what?! 

Personally, I don't think this kind of globalization will go much further than it has now.  In future generations, the tribal instinct is likely to kick in again and some sort of separatist  sentiment is likely to become powerful again.

That post is so vacuous, silly, misleading and lacking in factual accuracy as any I have ever read.  To accuse 17,000,000 people of being "narrow-minded, self-obsessed, bigoted nationalists" is not merely offensive, it is palpably stupid.  To quote the names you did is pointless and absurd.  Are you seriously saying those cultural and artistic outpourings only happened because of closeness to Europe, then you are in cuckoo land?  They all developed when Europe was involved in some conflict or other, usually involving us too, and when the continent was a place of enormous division.  Cutural exchange will continue whatever the political arrangements:  don't be ridiculous!  You are also maintain that the Referendum was the result of the bias of the elderly.  Any facts to substantiate that?  You are also, clearly, anti-democratic:  to advocate a change in the result is  not abiding by the democratic result.  It is you who are bigoted and self-obsessed, your post reeks of it.  To suggest that our cultural heritage is both due to and reliant on being politically tied to Europe is sheer nonsense.  What then of our situation as it is now, as members of the EU?  Obliged to accept dictates from officials who are unelected, and therefore undemocratic; having our sovereignty diluted.  And as to the security question:  you obviously know little of the reality.  Leaving the EU has nothing to do with anybody's security:  it is Nato that guards our, and Europe's, security, and Nato is nothing to do with the EU as an organisation.  You really ought to face facts, or rather get to know the facts.

Are you sure though?   It could just be coincidence.  Years ago I used to forum hop and often saw the same posters coming and going, we knew eachother just as you and I have posted in the same places for years.  Never occurred to me that anyone was following me, unless it was me who introduced them to the forum but that's different.  Blimey, people could have thought I was following them!  Perish the thought.

Back to topic, I am enjoying ordinary things atm and believe me, that is quite something.  Going to Whitstable for that short time really did me good.  I'm actually looking forward to tomorrow.
