The Witches Cookbook Diary
« on: October 09, 2016, 02:41:00 PM »
Hi all

I saw this last week in the local Mall, it was on one of those temporary stands that sell calendars & the like.

Does anybody have an opinion on this kind of thing?

What was?

I can find no record of such a book existing. However, it might be a US publication by Llewellyn.

Please supply iSBN number so that I can investigate.

What opinion do you want? That such a book is anti-Christian? That it contains recipes likely to poison non-witches? That witches are not entitled to write cookbooks?

I am the only witch on this forum - what do you want me to say?

I'm going to nip into Uxbridge and see if the pop-up calendar stand is there and if it has a copy of this book.

No luck in Uxbridge, I forgot that it is Sunday!

I have checkd all the listings of diaries and cookbooks aimed at the "witchy" market and the only ones that I can find, all from the US, are Celtic Folklore Cooking; A Kitchen Witch's Cookbook; Llewellyn's Herbal Almanac Cookbook; and Llewellyn's 2017 Sabbats Almanac.

As I asked before, if you can give me more information, ISBN number, publishers name, I will try and find out more and maybe give you a witch's appraisal of the contents.

I'm chilled, believe me - I no longer post in anger - too many run-ins with the Mods for me to do that any longer.

It is being the only witch that makes me touchy when a post is put on the Pagan Topic asking "does anybody have an opinion on this kind of thing?"

Why should a 'witchy' cook-book require opinions on 'this sort of thing' without any kin of informationasd to what 'kind of thing' is being referred to?

I was merely asking why the question was asked.

My experience here has taught me that most posts on the Pagan Topic by non-Pagans are usually a wind-up; you, Rose, are the one exception to the 'rule' that I can think of at the moment.

Oh, and Shaker, of course.

There are several seasonal 'witchy' cook-books out there, but they are usually on rather short print runs for rather obvious reasons.

I was thinking, do witches cook any different to anyone else?
Using seasonal produce, fruit, veg, herbs, etc, I understand,  that's something a lot of people try to do.  Apart from that, what do you cook that non-witches don't cook?  I'm just interested, not here to criticise.  I suppose I could google but as you are here, thought I'd ask.

It's understandable that, as the only witch here, you are touchy about potentially confrontational posts on the Pagan topic.  It would be better if there were more of you.   I feel the same about the Muslim topic and there only being one Muslim poster who ever goes there to respond to threads about Isis  ::).

Not much we can do about it except moan.

Thanks Brownie.

You are correct, witches generally cook exactly the same things and in exactly the same way as anyone else, BUT, if, as I suspect, this particular cookbook is American, it is almost certainly dogmatic in its insistance that the way it is shown in the book is THE ONLY way in which a witch would do it, and any witch who says that they do it differently is only playing at being a witch even if they have been doing it their way, i e NOT the American way, for their entire lives because that is the way that thier mother taught them.

Now I wonder why that attitude sounds familiar  :o?
Next I'll be hearing that some witches tell other witches they are not proper witches!  :D

Whay do you mean "Next"!?

I know of witches whose families have been witches for three generations who have been told that they are not "proper" witches because they do not wear black!

Hmmm!

There is a lady witch I was thinking of inviting here, she seems very nice.

But........ I think she comes from the states.

I don't think she's like that at all.

You might enjoy another Wiccan here, even if their Wicca is a bit different.

I have checked Uxbridge, Staines and a couple of the other pop-ups but none of them had this book - the guy at Uxbridge this morning couldn't find it and actually called his supplier who said that they do not have this title on their books.

Sorry Humph.

I have searched, through Google, as many Pagan/Witch/Culinary publishers as I can but have, so far, found no trace of such a title.

I have asked half a dozen of my fellow witches and none has ever heard of this title.

And before anyone says it - NO , I am NOT calling Humph a liar.

I don't think it is a book, I think as a diary it doesn't need an ISBN. I have no understanding what your issue is here.

I found this but it isn't a diary or calendar:
"The Witch's Cookbook A Collection Of Recipes, Spells, And Potions
by Gregory Branson-Trent"

I'm trying, "Witch's", rather than "Witches' ", looking at diary, calendar and almanac.  So we might come up with it.

Edit:  No luck, only herbs.

I'm sure it exists but no doubt has a different title.

See the thread title and the OP.

An opinion was requested - without being able to see the publication how am I supposed to give an informed opinion?

You're not and neither can anyone else.  It's up to the opening poster to come up with the correct information on something which he saw but probably didn't look at in detail.
If I happen upon such a calendar/diary on sale I'll take some notes and report back but can't imagine what opinion, if any, a person would have on something so innocuous.  All a matter of personal taste, I'd have thought!

I have only known of three other pagans on thisi forum; Horsethorn, and Rhiannon are two who have openly announced the fcat and one other who has not made the fact public but whom I know from the Beeb and in the "real" world.

Only the latter, as far as I am aware, has claimed to be a witch.

If there are any others they have kept it quiet and, considering the way in which The Craft and Pagans are regarded on this forum, I am not surprised that they have decided to either keep shtumm or quietly leave, or noy join at all.

And where you live makes you a witch? Nothing else?

If there is something else or other things that make you a witch, please enlighten me.
