Pedigree dogs and ill health

For years, people have been concerned that pedigree standards for dogs breed in health problems - this is a story from 2008:

Earlier this autumn, the topic cropped up again on a number of media platforms highlighting the on-going issues that groups such as the RSPCA have had over the years - this page from the RSPCA's website lists some of the reports that have come out since 2008.  https://www.rspca.org.uk/adviceandwelfare/pets/dogs/health/pedigreedogs

Why is it that Britons, so often known as dog-lovers, seem so keen to perpetuate these problems?  I realise that we aren't the only nation who seem keen to do this.
Are your, or your friends'/relatives', garages, lofts or sheds full of unused DIY gear, sewing/knitting machines or fabric and haberdashery stuff?
