My wife and I were talking today about retirement, I have recently given up work for good and noticed that the national holidays like bank holidays etc are just like any other day, when retired, and then thinking about it, there is no compensation offered by any of the governments that would make this loss of privileged days off more bearable for the retirees.Any ideas how we could start the ball rolling for some sort of offer?ippy
Do retirees, (by which I assume pensioners, as opposed to folk who have retired before they can take their state pension), actu7ally need any additional compensation, ippy? After all, whilst it is true that they arfe no longer bringing as much income as they might have been into the home, they are already doing a lot better in terms in percentage increases than many who are still earning - and they also have a number of perks, such as Senior Railcards and bus passes; not to mention various 'pensioner discount days' in a variety of shops.
I see what you're saying, but there are quite a number of days like spring bank holiday etc, where we retirees are no longer able to be rewarded with a day off and as I was saying as of yet there is no sign of anything in the way of compensation and you don't hear anyone speaking about it, I suppose the government is keeping mum hoping this issue will go away. ippy
But what would you be having a 'day off' from, ipp? Life? Haven't you experienced 40+ years' worth of them already?

Yes, brilliant. Obviously all the retired, teachers, students etc should man the factories and farms at bank holidays to relieve the tedium of having all those days not working!
That's all very well for you Uday, but we've just seen yet another two days respite for the workers and new years day tomorrow, what have I got as a retiree?A bit more money taken off of our heating bills could be a start; it's about time we poor old pensioners were taken more seriously about these issues. ippy

'We poor old pensioners' have done far better than the working public over the last 6 or 7 years thanks to the triple lock pledge, ippy. Perhaps the relaxation of that for national holidays could be your compensation.
I'm trying to work out my views on this - so, thinking aloud.I retired 5 years ago now with a backlog of 'doing nothing' that accumulated during my working life. Since retirement I've worked strenuously at 'doing nothing' and feel I've been adequately rewarded for my sterling efforts. I'll confess though, it has been tough at times: sometimes I don't get to finish breakfast until after 10am and even then I still have oodles of 'nothing' that I struggle to tackle before coffee time, and even more before lunch, when the prospective afternoon grind looms large.My concern is that on these high days and holidays I'd have to put more effort into 'doing nothing' that I do now to justify any extra dosh: so I don't think I'll bother thanks. That's beside the point Hope, they should be removing some of these days off or compensating the retired in an effort to at the very least level the playing field, for all, not just for little old harmless people like me, .ippy
If you want a day off from your retirement then how about on the bank holidays all the pensioners can take over for that day and run the trains etc. They'd do a better job than Southern Rail!!!
