Vans parked outside houses.
« on: January 15, 2017, 07:41:45 PM »
A while ago before I moved to a new home, the lay out of the road outside of my previous house affected where people could park, that house could have vehicles parked within about two meters of the front window and when the vehicle was a van, Transit size up, not only did it restrict the view, that was extreemly unpleasent in itself, it also conciderably darkend down the available light into the room.

I did have a word with the owners of the vans that parked in front of our front window and must have got it right because it was very rare to have any vans park there anymore.

With the afore mentioned problem in mind I have some sympathy with this recent news item about a no parking vans covenent in the deeds of houses on an estate, caravans can be a very similar problem to the residents that don't have them, I wouldn't want a caravan permenently parked near to my place; I don't think there is any easy answer that can supply an ideal answer about how we deal with these large vehicles parked so near to our private houses.

It's the blasted things parking on pavements which really get me angry. Try negotiating a streetload of 'em with a long cane. There's a draft bill going through the Scots Parliament to make this illegal, even on streets where there are no yellow lines. Can't come soon enough for me!

Shakes I was carefull to say I had some sympathy with this line of thought.

I'm not the next door neighbour that thinks he's Mr Plod born to enforce milli metre perfect parking, that sort of thing is of no interest to me, I'm a bliever in live and let live, the same as you seem to have indicated.

I wouldn't have bothered about the vans being parked on the estate that was mentioned in the news.

Inconsiderate parking I suppose will always be a bone, the vans that were parked more or less right by my window hadn't looked to cause me any discomfort, after I had asked them if they could park elswhere and explained why, I had no more trouble with or from them.

I do think large vehicles parked on a lot of these private estates, can and do and make life uncomfortable for neighbours allthough I'm sure it's not intended to do so in most cases.

I've never had ippy's problem (thank heavens) but I do live in a small close with about ten houses some of which contain two or three generations. In one case there are two adult children together with their partners as well the parents. They have four cars between them and their immediate neighbours have a further three. Neither house now has a front garden and they try to cram seven cars on the space of two former lawns and two small drives. It appears that there is always a need to park one of the cars on the road, and the only available space is one which causes other residents problems when trying to access their own properties.

Whenever I am away I give them permission to use my own drive. I suspect they are disappointed when I return from a week's holiday!

It surprises me that planners do not insist on more parking spaced when giving permission to developers. But to the developers the provision of parking spaces is perceived as a reduction in the profit they can make.

Yes H H the van owners were O K with me as I was very carefull to point out that I couldn't be telling them where to park but that doesn't mean I couldn't ask them if they would oblige me by parking elswhere; this van problem was the only problem we had with our neighbours when living there for over thirty years, even then, I only needed to speak to them once.

I live opposite a primary school, and at picking up/dropping off time the place is a mass of cars, mostly 4x4s, parking on double yellows even. If no-one is looking I sometimes pull their windscreen wipers up (the ones on the yellow lines)

Why are there windscreen wipers on the yellow lines?

On street parking is a subject that somewhat winds me up. 5 years ago I downsized to a new estate. I now live in a cul de sac of 28 houses. Most of the houses have a garage and a driveway big enough to contain one car. The very top end of the road has 8 houses owned by a housing trust and rented out, behind these houses is a car park with marked and numbered spaces, all these houses have 2 allocated spaces. So the estate builders/planners tried hard to get this right.

I was one of the first to move onto this little estate and for a while all was well but as the rest of the road became occupied the problems started.

No one in the road uses there garage to put their car in garages are only for storing junk apparently. I only have one car which I park on my drive and 2 motorbikes which I keep in my garage. So that means that all the houses in the road have at least one car parked in the road despite the builders plans. In the car park for the rented properties 2 of the people with allocated spaces there choose to park on the road by their houses instead. The car park contains a jacked up Audi TT which hasn't moved in 6 months while its owners park 2 other cars on the road.

Opposite my driveway lives the most objectionable man in the street (a prison officer) no one speaks to him and his wife and several neighbours have threatened him with violence due to his attitude to parking. It is his belief that he has the absolute right at all times to park on the street outside his house. If anyone else dare park there an unholy row breaks out. When he goes away for a weekend or a holiday he will park his large car there rather than on his driveway just so no one else can use the space. Recently a workman was doing repair work to the drains, which took several hours, when this guy got home from work (despite the fact that his drive was vacant) he phoned the workman's company to make him move the van.

At least 2 of the houses have 3 cars. The houses are small and a single car takes up all the space outside one house. Or in the case of my obnoxious neighbour the space outside one and a half house, he has a very small penis so has a gigantic car!

Of course in the week the road is relatively free during the day but in the evening the road is totally jammed up and no one can have visitors as  there is just nowhere for them to park. There is no way that a fire engine could ever gain access to the top of the street if required in the evening or at weekends.

Something needs to be done about the attitude that causes people to believe they have an absolute right to park on the road, they do not.

My "nice quiet" little retirement road has become an unpleasant place to live because of the parking issue despite the developers planning.

That place was a very happy place to live, we brought up our children there and managed to do so with good relations with all of our neighbours, the gun would have been usefull, those bloody Pidgens, it's a wonder they don't all die of boredom with that monnotonous coo coo cooing dam near 24/7.

The van parking was never a major issue when we were there, but it did make me notice that that kind of thing could end up with some considerable bad feeling, so whilst I thought the van ban on that estate a bit severe, as I said, I can understand that line of thought.

#9 John, the solution to too many cars is that when permission is granted for development it is permit parking only with a maximum of two permits per property. This *might* be something your local authority could introduce now - your first port of call should be your local councillor.

Re your neighbour, a similar case recently of a woman parking inconsiderately 'because I can' has made Yahoo News thanks to social media and the local newspaper. I could imagine someone filming your neighbour on a rant and sticking it on YouTube.

I would have the same gut feeling as you Rhi, the only trouble with your suggestion is this type of situation is more often than not insolluble, I call it, the tit for tat syndrome, dependant on how bad the problem is a move needs to be concidered.

Yes, Ippy, but if you move and don't declare the nuisance parking you can be sued by the new purchasers. There was a case a while back where some people hadn't told their purchasers that s neighbour ran a car repair business from his drive and were successfully sued for the whole purchase price. Anyone selling in this position needs to get very good legal advice.

Yes went through that six months back and thinking about it, it was agood job we settled our minor problem with the vans that parked virtually right next to our widow amicably, some years back.

That aspect of moving can be almost as bad as not telling the buyer that you can hear the neibhours fart in the mornings; thinking about it that would be a good one in court, keeping a straight face etc.

I have to join the rest, good to see you're back and still as sharp.

I guess so people can see the yellow lines clearly? Maybe if I leave the wipers alone people won't park on the lines?

The little oiks must pull them off the cars and throw them in the road. Spud does a commendable job in gathering them up again.

I don't know anybody who keeps their car in the garage. My brother and I once discussed the idea of buying a Lotus Elise between us but the plan foundered because you need to keep such a car under cover and I don't have a garage and he didn't have anywhere to store the junk that would be displaced if we cleared enough space in his garage to park a car.

Tell me about it  ::).  Our garage, which is a double one, is choca with boxes of goodness knows what.  Luckily we have a decent sized drive though that is a mixed blessing;  my husband races classic cars and we have half an A40 covered up, under the front bay window.   He has a thirty year old Porsche that he parks somewhere else most of the time but when he is going to use it, it goes in the drive much to my embarrassment and he parks his Range Rover, in front of that.

No-one parks in the road much around here except people doing work, like builders, and delivery drivers, or if someone has a lot of guests, but it wouldn't cause a problem if they did because the road is wide.
Let us profit by what every day and hour teaches us
