Well we know that that really took off after the start of the so called enlightenment but humanists tend to keep that bit quiet.
Nope. Really took off after the industrial revolution. Nothing quite says 'separate from nature' than a large iron machine belching steam tearing it up.

And if you think things were intellectually rather than technologically much different beforehand, you're dealing in out-and-out noble savage-ism of a kind not seen since Rousseau.
