Russia to decriminalise domestic violence

And largely at the behest of the Russian Orthodox Church, apparently.

The law includes child victims too, by the way. Not just gobby women who don't know their place.

Russia is a hellhole basket case excuse of a nation where bigotry and general backwardness are absolutely rife. Who is surprised by this?

I'd be surprised if anyone was surprised.
Appalling.

I'm sure one of our number will be along to defend the indefensible soon enough.

The attitude of the Russian Orthodox Church is bizarre imo

Xxxxxxxxxxxx
Those measures were contested bitterly by the Russian Orthodox Church and by right-wing politicians, with senator Yelena Mizulina stating that "a man beating his wife is less offensive than when a woman humiliates a man.”  "
Xxxxxxx
I know the church was suppressed in the old Soviet Union, maybe those old style communists got at least one thing right.

Is it just me, or does that comment sound winey?

Wonder which woman humiliated that senator in his childhood?

Took away his dummy perhaps.

Perhaps the Russians need to suppress it again🙄

Just to point out Mizulina is a she, not a he

I removed my post because I could see I'd misread the article
There is a bit more about it here

http://www.economist.com/news/europe/21715726-it-fits-traditional-values-lawmakers-say-why-russia-about-decriminalise-wife-beating

The fact the senator is a woman makes it even worse.

My link says about it being traditional and the view that if he beats you it means he loves you.

I'm glad I never married a Russian.

Some traditions are best forgotten.

I thought I'd misread the Russian Orthodox Church position on it, but perhaps not.

"The legislation has the active support of the Russian Orthodox Church, which said in a 2016 statement that physical punishment is a Russian tradition to be protected as "an essential right given to parents by God."

Unfortunately I don't think the Russians value human life the way other countries do, I thought that with Chernobyl.

While the civilised world incrementally progresses in making life better for its people, Mother Russia keeps on marching boldly into the past, trailing clouds of incense as she goes.
