Burns Night
« on: January 25, 2017, 08:16:01 PM »
A happy and joyful Burns Night to our several Caledonian chums aboard the good ship R & E  :)

Only ever had a (whisper it: there may be Scots listening) fake-vegetarian-pseudo-imitation-ersatz-haggis-replacement-substitute, but I won't say no to a toast, if you're offering  ;)

Thank you so much - and lang may your lum reek!

We had the real thing (which we do regularly, since we like it). Working my way through a bottle of Talisker at present: slowly, of course. Have a virtual nip on me, and a real one awaits if you even wind your way northwards.  ;)

Talisker? Class! Anyway, living less than seven miles from Mossgeil farm, where Burns farmed, and Mauchline where he did other......er.....stuff.... Burns is in the air I breathe. (Though I prefer Hoog or Ramsay - and Mcdairmid....but don't tell my friends, or I won't have many to tell). Anyway, here's a great rendition of Tam o Shanter....in memory of the many times I've tried to fall asleep in Ayr Presbytery, which sat in Alloway Church - the successor to "Allowa's auld haunted kirk'. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkiZbpd9stw

Talisker?   Tried it, my husband had it given to him two or three Christmases ago - and since, we have a couple of bottles in the cupboard.  Also a 14 year old single malt - The Balvenie Caribbean Cask - whatever that is.

Made me so ill, even the thought of it makes me ill.  I can smell it as I type.

Oh dear, I need a lie down.

I honestly don't know how people can drink whisky regularly and admire their guts, in more ways than two.  They must be cast iron.

Happy Burns Night!

Balvenie's not bad either, by the way! We're in the middle of Burns Supper season at the moment. If you're steeped in the bard, you NEED a cast iron stomach......and a shotgun to shoot them bloomin hagigis, of course! The full blown Burns Supper - if performed properly - is an experience to savour: poetry, song, speeches both serious and humerous, and the occasional dram. I've been to too many to count, and I've yet to see anyone incapacitated by drink.

I've been to the Talisker distillery. Skye is a favourite place and we try to go regularly. My avatar (found for me by Rhiannon) is the Old Man of Storr which in real life is stunning and my favourite walk - easy enough for the older grandkids to do.

If you ever get the chance to there do so.

I've a bottle of Talisker Skye on the go - very nearly finished. Before that it was Singleton Tailfire.

On Amazon I found a whisky tasting advent calendar.  :D

Mauchline kirk has records of Burns' -er - indiscretions - in the Session records, and the 'repentance stool' he sat on. He wrote a superb polemic on the hypocrisy of the Session....and it mentions Ayr Presbytery....now no longer hypocritical, more a cure for insomnia. You can read it - and all Burns' stuff, as well as listen, on the great BBC site, but here it is in its entirety. By the way, 'Holy Willie' - Willie Fisher, was a real person....his grave's thirty yards from the kirk. _ Holy Willie's Prayer. O Thou, who in the heavens does dwell, Who, as it pleases best Thysel', Sends ane to heaven an' ten to hell, A' for Thy glory, And no for ony gude or ill They've done afore Thee! _ I bless and praise Thy matchless might, When thousands Thou hast left in night, That I am here afore Thy sight, For gifts an' grace A burning and a shining light To a' this place. _ What was I, or my generation, That I should get sic exaltation, I wha deserve most just damnation For broken laws, Five thousand years ere my creation, Thro' Adam's cause? _ When frae my mither's womb I fell, Thou might hae plunged me in hell, To gnash my gums, to weep and wail, In burnin lakes, Where damned devils roar and yell, Chain'd to their stakes. _ Yet I am here a chosen sample, To show thy grace is great and ample; I'm here a pillar o' Thy temple, Strong as a rock, A guide, a buckler, and example, To a' Thy flock. _ O Lord, Thou kens what zeal I bear, When drinkers drink, an' swearers swear, An' singin there, an' dancin here, Wi' great and sma'; For I am keepit by Thy fear Free frae them a'. _ But yet, O Lord! confess I must, At times I'm fash'd wi' fleshly lust: An' sometimes, too, in wardly trust, Vile self gets in: But Thou remembers we are dust, Defil'd wi' sin. _ O Lord! yestreen, Thou kens, wi' Meg - Thy pardon I sincerely beg, O! may't ne'er be a livin plague To my dishonour, An' I'll ne'er lift a lawless leg Again upon her. _ Besides, I farther maun avow, Wi' Leezie's lass, three times I trow - But Lord, that Friday I was fou, When I cam near her; Or else, Thou kens, Thy servant true Wad never steer her. _ Maybe Thou lets this fleshly thorn Buffet Thy servant e'en and morn, Lest he owre proud and high shou'd turn, That he's sae gifted: If sae, Thy han' maun e'en be borne, Until Thou lift it. _ Lord, bless Thy chosen in this place, For here Thou hast a chosen race: But God confound their stubborn face, An' blast their name, Wha bring Thy elders to disgrace An' public shame. _ Lord, mind Gaw'n Hamilton's deserts; He drinks, an' swears, an' plays at cartes, Yet has sae mony takin arts, Wi' great and sma', Frae God's ain priest the people's hearts He steals awa. _ An' when we chasten'd him therefor, Thou kens how he bred sic a splore, An' set the warld in a roar O' laughing at us; - Curse Thou his basket and his store , Kail an' potatoes. _ Lord, hear my earnest cry and pray'r, Against that Presbyt'ry o' Ayr; Thy strong right hand, Lord, make it bare Upo' their heads; Lord visit them, an' dinna spare, For their misdeeds._ O Lord, my God! that glib-tongu'd Aiken, My vera heart and flesh are quakin, To think how we stood sweatin', shakin, An' piss'd wi' dread, While he, wi' hingin lip an' snakin, Held up his head. _ Lord, in Thy day o' vengeance try him, Lord, visit them wha did employ him, And pass not in Thy mercy by 'em, Nor hear their pray'r, But for Thy people's sake, destroy 'em, An' dinna spare. _ But, Lord, remember me an' mine Wi' mercies temp'ral an' divine, That I for grace an' gear may shine, Excell'd by nane, And a' the glory shall be thine, Amen, Amen! _

Admirable - though I was readng an article yesterday suggesting that Burns's record with women was a dark one.

That, Shaker, shows a mastery of the use of understatement! His affairs were notorious in his day, and he made no secrwet of them. He was frequently brought before the Kirk Session for 'fornication' - which we would pass off - but also for fathering more than a few illegitimate children (Indeed, at his death, his wife, Jean Armour, was left to bring a few of them up alongside her own children by Robert). Curiosly, his greatest love song, "Ae fond Kiss" was written to honour a lady he hadn't managed to have sex with!

Sometimes Burns Ayrshire Scots might seem difficult when read. However the Beeb has a superb archive of all his works, and audio versions, read by some of Scotland's finest, make things a lot clearer. Here's the site for anyone interested. http://www.bbc.co.uk/arts/robertburns/

Affairs and weans are one thing; rape is another:

(I make no comment on the veracity of the allegation, by the way - I'm not qualified to do so).

It'd be good to hear some of his works on the T V; you get subtitles.

Brilliant I'll have a go at that tomorrow, to date when I've heard his works read out I haven't been able to make out whatever it is being talked about, I must live in about the only place in the U K where we don't have an acent.😌
