Is well ahead currently on the ATP race race rankings. If he were to finish No1 this year, how big an achievement  would that be given
his age?

Ah, so he is well ahead in the race to the Atp tour finals qualification.
He is still a bit behind in the tour ranking list, though he did jump four places to 6th after his win.
If he did top that at the end of the year it would indeed be some achievement.

Also he has no points to defend in the second half of the year as he was out for 6 months. A win in Miami where neither Murray or Djokovic play due to injury would put him some distance ahead.

And he duly wins Miami, but is suggesting he won't play again till the French. Brave and yet sensible decision, given the effect clay courts can have.

And has decided not to play the French. This makes the end of year No 1 quite unlikely, and given Nadal's so far imperious clay court season, you have to think that he is currently most likely.

Oddly in the week that the youngest winner of a Masters tournament in 10 years happens, we have a top 5 in the rankings over 30.

And Nadal's form continues. Possible chance that by end of Wimbledon, he will be at No.1.

Big win for Thiem though and for Djokivic to lose 3rd set 6-0, you have to think Agassi has his work cut out

So Zverev wins his 2nd  Masters beating Federer who was apparently looking as if carrying an injury. If so, I would suspect he may take some recovery time which would mean Nadal returns to number one next week. But one suspects that this may well be a proper changing of the guard. Even without having progressed to the final of a slam, Zverev is got to be a near favourite for the US Open. If Federer's injury is at all serious and Nadal doesn't perform well for the rest of the season, we could see Zverev at number 1 at the end of the season.

Nadal unable to beat Kyrgios though and so we have a Masters tournament with none of the 'Big Four' in the semi finals. It must be well over 10 years since that happened. However, despite Kyrgios' win it still isn't a sufeit of youngsters with both Isner and Ferrer in their 30s.


ETA Apparently it wasn't that long ago, Paris 2012, which was Ferrer's only Masters win. If he were to repeat this it would be another in thus strange season of older, over 30,  and younger, under 22 winners.

It could well be that the US Open has 5-7 of the top ten not playing.

No, Federer won his first round match against Tiafoe on Tuesday in five sets.

And Zverev"s defeat makes Dimitrov's odds tumble. He is in the Federer/Nadal half of the draw though, as is Thiem making it packed. Other half looking a bit bereft at moment with Cilic the stand out but given his injury issues since Wimbledon, it's a big ask.

Interesting match up next round between Edmund and Shapovalov
