The Clutha
« on: March 22, 2017, 12:40:21 PM »
Many of you will be aware of The Clutha pub in Glasgow following on the tragic crash of police helicopter in 2013 into the pub. The article below gives a history of the pub that gives a more round picture of the pub.

indeed, Floo, but the article is about how this is not the sole point in its history. Too often such incidents happen, such as was referred to elsewhere in Enniskillen, or Lockerbie, and the tragedy is then all we see, and we forget that they existed before and after.

Know the area (or did before the developers went on overdrive) I confess I'm not to familiar with the Clutha. Now, if it was the Scotia.....!

Glad you liked it, I thought it had appeal to those of us who know and live Glasgow, and those of us who know and love pubs. It's about a half mile from where I live and while I am not a regular, I have been at times in the past. Along with the sister pub across the road, the Scotia, it has been the place for many a musician to start out on their career. They attract all types, thhey are proper locals with those who prop up the bar on a daily basis and those who pass through.

The Scotia was famed for its' sessions back in the day....quite a few luminaries of the folk scene used to gather there and after hours the music kept on flowing. I first saw the late, great Matt McGinn there - and I met Roy Williamson and alistair MacDonald, both of whom I counted as friends (when we could count at all....)

indeed I am though it's a while since I have been.  If you are back worth checking out the Voodoo Rooms as well, not quite so much of a proper pub but the music is usually good. Also shoukjshoukjd you be in the mood for something more folky, Sandy Bell's.

On an aside of scary rowdy people and pubs, I once found myself with some time to kill in Halifax. My thought turned to a little session and so I tried to find a pub. Now I am not fussy, nor do I intimidate easily: I am after all a 6'5' Glaswegian but all of the pubs were a bit hooky to my eye, so I ended up at the thrash metal bar with Napalm Death on the jukebox and had a marvellous time. Often the scary rowdy are the safest.

Saw that, and Floor has started a thread on it. I have many friends at Westminster. I am sure your daughter will be OK but thoughts are with you.

GOOD NEWS daughter is safe
IM very familiar with Halifax, used to live not far away.
and just as you say, when my boy lived in Newcastle we were on the town from lunchtime one day and being a bit of an old chap  I couldn't make the whole journey home in one go on the bus without pissing my pants . SO  my lad said there's a rough pub at the next stop if its that bad , you can go in there
We walked in and the place went silent. But that was not for us , we had walked into a wake, and someone was about to sing
The people were all young but dressed in a way that didn't inspire a relaxed atmosphere, tattoos ,shaved heads, chains ,smoking dope.
by the time id come out the toilet my lad had two pints on the bar . 5 pints later we had one of the best nights wed ever had with our new best friends.
btw my boy is 6 foot 4 with hands like shovels which does give me a level of confidence

Glad your daughter is safe, I am surfing all social media to check friends are OK. So far all are but there are so many that it is difficult to be sure.

It's difficult to avoid judging people by appearances but my experience is it's usually the fairly respectable ones you need to look out for. And the small ones - I don't know if you know the film Trainspotting but as a larger person it's nearly always the Begbies you have to watch out for.
