Are you objecting to a post because you perceive it is not complimentary and comes from a newcomer to forum? Do newcomers have to prove something before they can make comments you consider critical? All members of this forum, no matter what their experience, have a right to express their opinions.

All Cecily is doing is using established Freudian personality development theory terminology to suggest that an apparent somewhat obsessive behaviour on your part may be due to experiences when you were little more than a neonate. Now, if what you are really objecting to is the use of pseudo-scientific psychoanalytical bollocks ... then I am with you.

You object to the term anal because you consider it to be rude, but do not know its derivation. Fine. But this forum is full of contributors being confrontational to each other. Does Cecily - as a new member - have to serve a probation period before she can behave similarly?

Nothing is wrong with liking to know the correct time - but you said to the nearest second. This is surely nothing more than hyperbole, if not, then it appears rather obsessive.

It isn't intended to be rude, Floo, and as HH points out it is shorthand for being 'anally retentive': a term that has its roots in psychoanalysis of the Freudian type.

It is commonly used today to describe someone who tends to be excessively/obsessively concerned about precise details.

Apart from Einstein et al ... I'm sure time is not only relative but entirely subjective.

I find that the faster I swim the slower the clock goes round

Thinking/listening/looking "slowly" .. seems to create more time?

It isn't 'wrong', or for that matter 'right', but its relevance does vary.

For example, as I write this the time is approximately 10.45 am and in my current circumstances that is good enough. However, I if fancy a bet in the 4.20 at Southwell this afternoon, or if I'm to catch a certain train, knowing the precise time then becomes more important if I'm to do what I intend doing.

I like to do things at certain times each day, this has got more so since I have got older, and no doubt more senile.

I never feel thirsty, and have certain times of the day when I have a drink, usually a glass of water, otherwise I would get dehydrated.
