A lack of technical and vocational education will increase the demand for immigrants who will be more educated than the indigenous population.

It isn't rocket science.

Do you have a link to any story or details on the reduction?

The word education means leading out. It is a process which provides a student with opportunities to develop in ways which may be unique to that student.

The Conservative government appears to be dazzled by the restrictive vision of PISA. The countries which do well in PISA are largely the ones  which practise cramming and repeated rehearsal of PISA-type assessments. PISA does not encourage creativity. The restrictions of EBacc appear to concerned with increasing the UK's position in the PISA rankings.

This is not education, it is schooling. And as is so often in British government activities, criteria adopted are those which are easy to measure not those which actually inform.

About 40 years years ago I knew of a school in a poor catchment area. Its pupils were not all going to excel - the headteacher knew that his outputs (in academic terms) would find it difficult to match those of the other three secondary schools in the area. He tried another approach. He employed a couple of teachers who were specialists in music and drama. The school developed a choir, a  jazz band and then an orchestra. They put on concerts and musicals and plays. The headteacher believed that the added value he gave his students was as valuable as academic results.
Does Magna Carta mean nothing to you? Did she die in vain?

I don't know but the plan seems to be linked to something David Davis said about British citizens being converted to do the low pay skills jobs held by foreigners.

Immigrants could increase the value of any savings by sending the money home.
British citizens will under Brexit will not be able to do that.

It's a bum scheme but it seems to be a deliberate deskilling which started with Gove with his one size fits all English Bollocklaureate nonsense.

I think some of this goes back to how under Labour vocational qualifications were rated the same, or sometimes superior to GCSEs is the stupid league tables. I read that back in those days a BTec in Horse Care equalled 4 GCSEs and schools therefore focussed on beauty therapy and grass management instead of geography and history because they were easier to deliver. I think that had something to do with Gove's policies, but of course he doesn't see the value in vocational qualifications so there;s no balance. The problem it seems to me is that the educational system is used as an ideological dumping ground and political marketing tool by whichever bunch of dipsticks are running the show - it isn't really about what is best for pupils or even the country as a whole.

Yes this wasn't just Big government, this was Gove acting like an eighteenth century Despot.

He has this rather awful attitude of Being Right About Everything. Both he and his wife have an arrogance about their capabilities that is as erroneous as it is terrifying.

Dear Vlad,

Just to say, I am still a committed fan, and you are right, it is not only the NHS that the Tories are ruining, I tend to think of the Tory party as the little boy with his finger in the dyke ( careful ::) ) the Tories are a reactive party instead of a proactive party, they have no men or women of vision or compassion.

Gonnagle.

PS: I am also a big fan of old Blue ::)

You are spot on. They have a delusion that has unfortunately been indulged.

I'm not a big Stewart Lee fan but his take on Gove in a past Guardian I think is very worthwhile.
