Immortal lines from the movies (esp.Hollywood)
« on: May 22, 2017, 03:48:28 PM »
Not too sure of the provenance of some of these.

"You dare to dicker with your Pontiff!" (The Agony and the Ecstasy)

"Keep a sharp look-out for sodomite patrols" (Sodom and Gomorrah?)

"Piss off Brahms! What a wanker." (Lisztomania)

"Psst! Liszt!" (A Song to Remember?)

"Dance? I don't even like to walk" (The Time of Your Life)

"A year of group therapy could cure your need to be a human being" (The Eye of the Cat)

I'm sure some real movie buffs can provide many more.

I think 'The Agony and the Ecstasy' one is 'You dare to dicker with your pontiff!'

I was amending it just as you were typing your correction :)

I've always liked, 'I remember every detail, the Germans wore grey, you wore blue'.   Bogart, Casablanca.   Also, 'will I see you tonight?'  'I never make plans that far ahead'.

Sorry, not corny lines, just neat.
They were the footprints of a gigantic hound!

What I recall is:

Hitler was a much better painter than Churchill.  Hitler could do a whole apartment, two coats, in a single day.

Max: Really, I never dreamed that...
Franz Liebekind: That is because that you were taken in by that verdammte Allied propaganda! Such filthy lies! They told lies! But nobody ever said a bad word about Winston Churchill, did they? No! 'Win with Winnie!' Churchill! With his cigars. With his brandy. And his rotten painting, rotten! Hitler - there was a painter! He could paint an entire apartment in one afternoon! Two Coats! Churchill. He couldn't even say 'Nazi'. He would say 'Noooo-zeeehz, Nooooooooooooo-zeeehz!' It wasn't Noses! It was Nazis! Churchill!...Let me tell you this! And you're hearing this straight from the horse. Hitler was better looking than Churchill. He was a better dresser than Churchill. He had more hair! He told funnier jokes! And he could dance the pants off of Churchill!...Churchill!

We took morphine, diamorphine, cyclizine, codeine, temazepam, nitrazepam, phenobarbitone, sodium amytal, dextropropoxyphene, methadone, nalbuphine, pethidine, pentazocine, buprenorphine, dextromoramide, chlormethiazole. The streets are awash with drugs you can have for unhappiness and pain, and we took them all. Fuck it, we would have injected vitamin C if only they'd made it illegal.

From Cabaret the context was all in leading up to the eventual punchline:

Sally: I saw a film the other day about syphilis. Ugh! It was too awful. I couldn't let a man touch me for a week. Is it true you can get it from kissing?

Fritz: Oh, yes. And your king, Henry VIII, got it from Cardinal Wolsey whispering in his ear.

Natalia: That is not, I believe, founded in fact. But from kissing, most decidedly; and from towels, and from cups.

Sally: And of course screwing.

Natalia: Screw-ing, please?

Sally: Oh, uh...

[thinking]

Sally: fornication.

Natalia: For-ni-ca-tion?

Sally: Oh, uh, Bri, darling, what is the German word?

Brian Roberts: I don't remember.

Sally: [thinking] Oh... um... oh yes!

Brian Roberts: Oh, no...

Sally: Bumsen!

Natalia: [appalled] Oh.

Brian Roberts: That would be the one German word you pronounce perfectly.

Sally: Well, I ought to. I spent the entire afternoon bumsening like mad with this ghastly old producer who promised to get me a contract.

[pause]

Sally: Gin, Miss Landauer?
