There is a girl in my daughters class whose name is Medea.

Don't get me wrong, if parents want to use pagan names for their kids, I consider it to be their business not mine, but Medea? According to legend, she ate her own children.

So? Why shouldn't a name be given to children of all sexes?
Don't know. You were the one suggesting they were girls names.

Quote
Grimsby,  Waterloo,  Southend,   Arijaba   ...

That reminds me of an old joke. Posh and Becks are in a taxi soon after the birth of their child. The taxi driver is congratulating them and he asks David what the name of the child is. David looks blankly at him for a bit and says "give me the name of a London station."

"Paddington."

"No."

"Waterloo."

"No."

"Fenchurch Street."

"No."

"Victoria."

David's eyes light up. "Yes, that's it!"

Then he turns to Posh and says "Victoria, what's the name of our new child?"

I didn't say they were exclusively girls' names.  ???

As a devout Catholic, Rees Mogg presumably is, he might not be thrilled if his son lives up to the name he will no doubt incur in years to come.

Until a few years ago, French parents were restricted to an official list of first names. Maires were instructed not to register names not on the list.

One trend I have noted is to give girls forenames which we usually consider to be surnames - some spring to mind:
   Taylor, Channing, Kennedy

Another trend is the use of place names - also for girls:
   Chelsea, Savannah, Shannon

I haven't heard of anyone called Scunthorpe, though.

We could rename Floo " Grimsby "

😉

Can't help but think that Brad & Angelina Pitt's daughter Shiloh is something of an unfortunate spoonerism.

Off topic, but I think I'll be forgiven my first grandchild has just arrived Reece, he's probably the best looking grandchild in the world, be fair I've had to get to 75 years old for the first one.

By the way I love the name Reece.

Many congratulations. We're few years behind you, but (worryingly?) Mrs Blue is already getting a bit "whatever the word is for grandmother broody"...

Ah well.

Congratulations: you'll love being a grandparent (I speak from experience).

Best bit is enjoying being even more silly than you ever were with your own kids.

Silly that comes naturally to me sounds good, I'd like to think I've the ability to be serious for some of the time, but thanks too.

My son's adopted and has always been at the hart of the whole of the family but this baby is someone of his very own, I'm especially pleased for him as well as for myself and everyone else.

Ippy that's marvellous news! Congratulations & well done to all.
(Never guessed you were in yo r 70s, come over as younger)

You can imagine what his poor little son will be called at school!

"Old Sixty" sounds about right  :D. What are his other names, think I read Horatio Boniface. So if I'm right - 'Horrid" & 'Bonny'.
