Ultimately, Nothing Matters
« on: June 07, 2017, 05:21:57 AM »
When you are grimly involved in getting, when the world seems to exist only with in your own circle of activities, when something you have built or bought begins to shut out the sight of the sun -- remember, ultimately, nothing matters. Say it aloud: “Ultimately, nothing matters!”

A negative counsel? By no means!

Ultimately, nothing matters. Everything matters in its time and in its place -- and give everything its due. Yet reserve a small corner of the consciousness for the ultimate which maintains perspective, which recognizes the ages as well as today. It makes you more peaceful, it makes you more of yourself, and it makes you stronger.

:)

As do I.

That nothing ultimately or objectively matters means that what does matter to you and you're at any time becomes more significant not less.

Arthur Balfour once said: "Nothing matters very much, and in the end nothing matters at all." But Thomas Nagel (IIRC) went one further and said something like, if nothing ultimately matters, then that doesn't matter either  :)

And as quoted before, Angel said 'If nothing you do matters, all that matters is what you do.'

I like the OP. The idea that in the end nothing ultimately matters helps me a great deal in trying to keep a balanced view of the world and myself. :)

Gosh, Keith, that's a smackeroo.  I was going to launch into a long speech about nothingness in Buddhism, but then I thought, what the hell.

I agree with the OP - but it can cause me to be a little too detached sometimes.

Hasn't old 'Ecclesiastes' said it all?

Quote
Again I saw that under the sun the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to the men of skill; but time and chance happen to them all.

Some things matter to me, even if they are irrelevant in the bigger picture.

That's pretty much the point.

No.

Things matter precisely because there's zero evidence that we do live for ever.

Mattering /= lasts for ever. That's a silly mistake that a lot of people make. Understandable at first, true, but give it a few minutes.

It is common knowledge that nothing matters eventually as said in the OP.  But this is according to the normal conscious mind.

But we find that things do matter on a day to day basis to each of us and we still try to be moral and good. We still try to develop and grow into better and more knowledge people, almost instinctively.

So...maybe all this DOES matter in some subtle way that our conscious mind is not aware of. That is what spirituality is all about, that everything we do does matter.

Ultimately...everyone develops and gets salvation (according to spiritual theories). So it does matter!

It is only in a material sense that everything changes, dies and decays...so nothing matters.

It matters! While you are alive it matters.

Eternity can look after itself.
