I have an iPhone, and I love it.

I can attach my iPad to it by personal hotspot, and get internet access just about anywhere.
Which means I can listen to any music just about anywhere or even watch films.

I post on here, by hotspotting at this very moment. I can keep in touch with my son, as he tours the world either by linking up the phone or iPad and he can show me his surroundings on live video.

I can text, which is miles better than leaving a message and more convenient.

I book my cinema tickets through my phone and use the wallet function to store the tickets and when I arrive to watch my film the cinema staff scan in the code on my phone, no messing about collecting tickets, no queues.

I take photos on it.

Look up places while I'm away from home and if I link it to my iPad can look up no end of useful things while on holiday, like events or restaurants or taxi companies.

I can order food to be delivered by using just eat, wherever I am.

I use it to order things for my dad, sometimes he even gets it the next day, amazon is brilliant.

Nothing nicer than when my dad tells me about something he believes is impossible to get that he wants to try, and I whip out my phone and iPad and order it at his house ( where he has no phone, or TV, he's a total technophobe won't even have a washing machine).

The last thing he told me about was a tea company in Cornwall that grew their own tea leaves in Cornwall and that it was almost impossible to get the tea bags , because most of it was exported. He wanted to try it, things " British" impresses my dad.
I whipped out my phone and iPad, searched for it, ordered it off amazon and it was delivered to his door, the very next day.

🙂

I think it frightens him a bit 😜💐 he's 92 this July. Almost blind.

My phone, I love it, helps me bring some happiness into other people's lives.

I have to watch my impulsive nature though 😀

I'm still learning what other useful things I can use it for.

I can also use it like a sat nav, if I need to find a road or place while being in a strange place, that's very useful.

If you can connect to google earth and select street view, you can even see what the place looks like 😜

We survived without a great many things, only on the basis that they didn't exist. Now that they do exist, and make life easier, who would choose to do without them?
Probably because phones now are so very much more than a thing that has only one function, i.e. make phone calls.

They don't make life easier, imo.

Why not?

I'm sorry, but just to assume that everyone is happy to take phone calls at another's convenience is just inconsiderate, if not downright rude. It's far, far more intrusive into someone's personal time than a text.

My kids tell me if my phone calls aren't convenient, and as they are the only people I phone on a regular basis, apart from a couple of elderly people who don't have mobile phones, there is no problem. Texts are much more intrusive than phone calls, imo, especially as most of the time you haven't a clue what they are on about as they use this stupid text speak. We will just have to agree to differ on this topic.

I don't know anyone who uses text speak, stupid or otherwise. People I know use English. But not understanding the way some use it is no reason to reject it.

Well I have completely rejected it, as no one has come up with a sensible reason for texting.

Anyway if people are happy being tied to their phones 24/7 that is up to them, just as it is up to me, not to be shackled by the things.

I get texts from my daughter, saying she would like to talk to me. She might also tell me when she will be available - and not in the shower.

At the appointed time, I pick up my phone and I use FaceTime to contact her (like Skype - but better). And I can talk to her and see my grandsons and see what she has just bought, or the newly-decorated dining room ... or whatever. I can do this because we both have iPhones.

And it costs me nothing beyond the standing charges I have aleady paid because I am not running up landline charges.

Nobody's tied to anything - they come with an off button. Unless there's an element of compulsion - which I admit there can be with work - people generally like making life easier. Rhiannon wasn't stranded with kids in a knackered car. Ippy got his dog to the vet quickly. Walter can see family half way around the world; ditto HH.

For myself I still don't see the advantage of a mobile phone over that of a landline or computer, apart from when I am driving. I prefer my laptop for sending e-mails. I find an ipad, which I also own, extremely hard to use. I love my Kindle, but I am concerned that when it eventually wears out I will have to buy one of the more modern ones with a touch screen, which I don't get on with. HEY HO.

I don't need it apart from when I am driving. Good grief in the days before mobile phones we managed to survive, now the whole situation has got crazy. People are using their phones almost all the time, which is daft!

Yes Floo in some ways you're right but you never can tell about things that might happen to you, if you've got your phone with you, doesn't mean you have to use it but it could get you out of potentially serious trouble.

Just think you're out there trying to rescue one of those Welsh mountain goats and you slip if you've got your phone, just think of all those husky mountain rescue men that'll come out to get you.

Why do we keep asking Welsh people, 'did your dad have a beard'?  (Just a thought).

Apart from going to the supermarket, or other short journeys once or twice a week, I don't drive very far these days. If we are going on a journey one of my kids does the driving. My daily walk first thing in the morning is just around our local neighbourhood where I am well known, so if I got into any trouble someone would sort me out.

Who asks Welsh people if they have a beard? I have never heard anyone ask a Welsh person that question. I am not Welsh.

It's a bit of Cockney humour we ask any Welsh if their dads had a beard, we're questioning their parentage, with all of those mountain goats running about up there in Wales, it's supposed to be just a bit of good humoured banter.

If you were injured rescuing a mountain goat, you could be helping the goat at the same time if you had your phone with you.

Floo go back to bed and then get up again only this time wake up when you get up, you can be hard work at times.

Cockneys don't keep telling people they're accepted they have to accept some good humoured banter as the alternative, that's how it is, I believe this is how it is with humour in a lot of big cities.

I find your comments an embarrassment to the human race , get off your puter , allow your children the freedom they deserve and retire to your darkened hovel and revel in your swamp of ages past

have a nice day

An Englishman, Scotsman and Welshman walk into a bar. Each orders a pint of Brain’s but, as they’re served, a fly lands in each pint.

The Englishman immediately pushes his beer away in disgust.

The Scotsman thinks for a few seconds, shrugs, and also pushes the pint away.

The Welshman turns bright red, picks the fly out of the beer and holds it over his glass shouting: “SPIT IT OUT! SPIT IT OUT!”
