'Terrorist Attack' On Mecca Foiled !!!!

Just heard about this a minute ago on net news.

What exactly do we know about what the shrine in Mecca actually is?
Muslims claim it was originally founded by a Jewish prophet, as a place for Jewish worship & became filled with so-called pagan idols over the centuries before Mohd's arrival.

The name Allah from Al-Lah meaning The God was supposed to be the biggest name of all the pagan idols inside the shrine so Mohd took that to be the original god worshipped there.

I recently read it was a Shiva shrine but not too sure about THAT one ?!!?
There's absolutely no mention in The Bible of this place being a target of pilgrimage of any kind so what do we think we know of its origins ?

You might be surprised to know how little is known OR admitted to about this most sacred of Muslim places.

I only know what I've read & what a couple of people have told me.

Mecca is believed to be the birthplace of the Prophet and the religion.
Some are certain of this, others are not.
(Non Muslims don't care one way or the other)

Generally only Muslims allowed to go there but exceptions have been made for photojournalists.

It's a cosmopolitan place and has some good hotels.

At the time the terrorist attack was planned it would have been packed with people from all over the world so a good thing the attack was nipped in the bud by the security services.

What do you know of the so-called prophet's character & what he did, according to Islamic tradition.?
 
Do you know anything of the Hadiths or Sayings Of The Prophet. Muslims say these are not totally accurate so shouldn't be relied upon. MMM ONLY the Hadiths ?!?!!?

We 'know' Mohd couldn't read or write so how could he know what his so-called friends were reporting about his hallucinations. He himself was almost driven mad by these visions until others persuaded him they were from 'God' ??!?! He may well have been a very good man despite all this !

We must also remember Mohd NEVER ever talked directly with Allah & only with Gabriel ?!?!? Assuming it WAS Gabriel as God never seems to patrol His own staff !?!?

I do know why it is sacred to Muslims Trippy, it is believed Mohammed was born there and Islam started there. That's why it was a target, a lot of unsuspecting pilgrims from many countries in one place.

What I don't 'get' is how the conversation veered into what we know /don't know about Mohammed.

No, that isn't what is being said. Rather that the question of the terrorist attack itself is specific and isn't the best way to address the question of why the site is sacred.

Exactly. There are places that many Christians and Jews consider to be sacred. Their authenticity is disputed as is the veracity of our 'gods' and prophets.

Yet we'd surely be glad if terrorists who were planning to attack those places in peak season were foiled.

We wouldn't be saying,"Bloody silly people to go there in the first place".

Well Nick...from what I have read,  Abraham was once travelling  around this place and he saw a meteorite strike the earth with a huge flash. He thought it was a message from God. He made this a holy place after that.

Then his concubine  Hagar (servant maid of his wife Sarah) and her son Ismail were banished from the tribe and they started living in this place. Hagar is believed to have walked from one hill to another in this area in search of water.. This ritual of walking from one hill to the other is repeated by pilgrims even today. 

So...the Mecca of today has been considered a holy place from the days of Abraham and his son Ismail (around 2000 BCE).

Subsequently, Arab tribes started placing idols and worshiping them at this place. After Mohammad, it became the centre of Muslim prayer.

The meteorite stone is present even today (though broken up) inside the Kaaba.

The etymology of the word Allah is not very clear. But that it is pre-Islamic is clear.

It certainly is very ancient, there are many stories about Makkah & differences of opinion.
However the title of this thread is "Terrorist Attack on Mecca Foiled" so,to me at any rate, the origin of the place is not relevant to the thread & could be discussed on another thread.

The terrorist attempt was foiled and for that we can be thankful or at least glad.
