This story goes to show how racism needs cracking down on at an early age. Of course it says more about the bigotry of the parents who have indoctrinated their children.

I think the phrase she used infers an unforeseen problem whereas fly in the ointment is a minor irritation that spoil s something so not exactly the same means as I understand it. She could have just said what she meant in rsther than using some phrase to imply it. Not racist but just a bit dim!
oh c'mon .that's fly-ist

We also use the odd phrase 'Nitty Gritty' when we mean fine detail, but this has other connotations, I think to do with the slave trade.
This is complete nonsense - a folk-etymology.  http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/1988776.stm
[Edit] I see I've already rubbished this, back in July. Oh well - the more often folk-etymological bollocks gets rubbished, the better.

When conspiracy nuts start spouting their bollocks, the best answer is "That's what they want you to think".

Erm....if the reference was to Gypsies...or to Lithuanians....would there be such a fuss?

I don't know. the first part with the "ring leaders" sounded like the children deliberately winding up the adults.
