Charlie Gard anomally?
« on: July 11, 2017, 04:31:41 PM »
Leaving aside the facts of this case something else related to the issue gives me pause for thought;

Given that in English law the courts have power to rule on the medical treatment? or withholding of medical treatment given to a child (in it's best interests) despite the wishes of parents etc. Quite rightly IMO.

How does that square with the other end of life where terminally ill/severely disabled people etc. Ask to be allowed to die/given assistance to die. And are almost always denied.

Why are not the best interests/wishes of the patients paramount in these cases?

Allowed to die and assistance to die are not equivalent. It's the fact that Charlie is only being kept alive, that is the issue here. People are often allowed to die, and things such as a Do Not Resuscitate order are covered by it. People asking for assistance to due is seen as different.

Good point.

Still got my low level brain cells thinking about this issue though, have not got to then end of the process yet though.

Still on this issue, there was a very interesting article in todays TIMES about the extent to which the American right wing have become involved in the issue, and the reasons why. It is all about gaining political leverage for religion interests aparrently....

Like I said leaving aside the gut wrenching emotional side of the issue a lot to think about here. And I don't have the answers.

There is a big reason the American right are bigging up this story. They are using it to argue against state health care.

It's the Nazi death cult of the NHS, which takes away parental rights, and uses BIG GOVERNMENT to oppress them.   Far better to have private health insurance, so that thousands of kids die without insurance, or when the money runs out.   But it's freedom!

John, Charlie's parents want him alive.

IMHO that means more than "well wishers" who want him to die.

True of the vast majority of parents about their offspring.

They don't always get their wish since reality insists on not always being obliging.

Who wants him to die, please? Be specific. Name names.

That is an old trap of yours, which I am not falling into.

Name me one Great Ormond Street Doctor who has not advised "Palliative care"in this case. We all know what that means.

What is? Expecting you to substantiate the more arseholeish of your blessedly rare effusions?

Yes. The kid has been fucked over by nature and random chance and there's nothing left to do but make what little time is left to him as comfortable as humanly possible.

Nice to see what your idea of "humanity" is.

You've shown us yours (entirely unevidenced and unsubstantiated allegations that some people want a disabled boy to die, though unevidenced and unsubstantiated is fairly obviously your bag, natch) so I thought it was only fair.

I think it is far kinder to give this poor little chap palliative treatment. Apparently the experimental treatment has not been applied to anyone as badly affected as Charlie Gard is.

And the idea of palliative care is nothing to do with the case. It is about choosing to remove life support
