Yes, I'm very fond of Desmond Tutu.

Aung San Suu Kyi may not hold very much power and may be in a controlled position. Otherwise, being the compassionate person that she is she surely would not allow these dreadful deeds to take place.

Aung San Suu Kyi was released from house-arrest under severe restrictions on exactly what political actions and speeches she was allowed to make on pain of being totally gagged and reinterned as I seem to remember it!

Burma still exists as is for as much as what happens does not upset the Burmese military. Upset them too much and they will have no compunction about taking over again, regardless of how much violence it takes to do so.

NO! She just has to be extremely circumspect about ghow she goes about things - if she were re-interned she would not have a voice at all.

She might well be doing what she can INSIDE Burma having been muzzled for consumption outside it.

I agree with Owlswing.

It is easy to be critical of her when one does not know what constraints she is subject to. It is easy for Desmond Tutu to be critical from a distance. (What, I wonder, is he doing about the apparent gradual meltdown of responsible government in South Africa?)

I note that another Nobel laureate, Malala Yousavzai, is concerned about the situation.

How could this ethnic cleansing/conflict actually be halted? I suspect anything she might say, if inclined, would be ignored.

My memory is really not good and not improving!

I agree too with Harrowby and am actually surprised that Desmond Tutu does not realise Aung's position. As I mentioned in my original post, I'm sure she must be distraught at what is happening to her people and frustrated that she can do little to help the situation.

Harrowby.... very sad what is happening and escalating in South Africa re the attacks on white farmers and deterioration of government.

She always had a hard edge to her - not visiting her dying husband, because she knew that she'd not be allowed back into Burma, for example. I haven't given up on her yet, but I hope she acts soon.

I am sure that the fact you "haven't given up on her yet" with be a serious morale booster for the lady! She has given most of her adult life trying to improve the lives of the Burmese people against a military junta that did all it could to silence her short of killing her.

What have you done for the people of wherever you live that allows you to be so patronisng to soemone who had had a death-sentence hanging over her head for most of her adult life?

What he speaks out against happened because people allowed it to happen by not speaking out sooner and giving the people the freedom to act as they do.

I understand what you're saying but I expect she & husband had agreed what to do in the event of one of them being ill. Their lives are so far different from ours, they have different priorities.

(Glad to see you, noticed earlier you'd been susp. which was bit of a shock  :D. Didn't see the argument & won't ask but wanted to tell you about my cycling.)
