Some Christians claim that god is speaking directly to them, what exactly do they mean by that? How do they know it is god and not their imagination playing tricks?

My late mother-in-law believed she and god were on speaking terms and great buddies. ::) God was apparently in agreement with her about everything including which clothes were suitable to wear, and which TV programmes to watch. ;D
he only speaks to those who believe he speaks to them , funny that ! ::)

Most of our food manufacturers are reducing the content/size of their products and selling them at the same price as before but I think you'll find the Baco foil is being packed in very similar looking size packs as before but the sheets of foil are thinner, perhaps this could be a contributing factor to this problem of thinking god is speaking to you?

The only time I thought God was actually speaking to me was when I was walking home from Sunday School, aged about 7. I was trailing behind my sister as usual, day-dreaming and *heard* a strong voice in my head making a comment. It never happened again, so I can still run the film through in my head - location, matching pink coat and hat, clutching little bunch of clover flowers I'd picked. :)

Errrrrrrrrr yeh right? :-\

Floo you seem to be living in a humourless desert up there in little old Wales, I really didn't think my comment was that deep,
the weather has been on the damp crappy side for Essex, still, we haven't gone that rusty yet.

Kind regards ippy

ipster, I don't think it's a failure of humour so much as the fact that floo didn't get the reference to tin foil.

Some of the above is common sense. But God does speak to us directly sometimes. It is to protect us and save us from the things that could hurt us or over power us.  Your imagination cannot predict the future and it certainly cannot warn you of danger.
May be you should be asking why you never heard God speak.

Because it doesn't exist is the obvious answer.

Not even educated your answer. Nothing obvious about such an answer which is just a typical void one.

You ask a question " Does God speak to you?"  If you don't believe God speaks to people then for what logical and educated reason could you really ask the question? It cannot be to gleam knowledge because you cannot reason or produce an educated answer to anyone who actually believes God does.  Should you really post threads when you have no logical purpose or reason for doing so?  This is clearly shown in your replies.

To find out why people believe such a thing. Obviously.

How does one get to want to know God exactly?

If the Biblical god exists, it isn't an entity you would want to be acquainted with. If you read the Bible without wearing roses tinted spectacles you would realise the deeds attributed to it are those of an evil psycho.
when I asked an old friend of mine about god in the old testament he said 'we don't study that , we're Christians'

I'm off to pick some cherries !!!! bye

Don't blame them.

Are you really in a position to pass judgment?
Your lack of knowledge would suggest you are not.

Sometimes Shaker, you do need a shake-up .. :)

A good response Sassy, but it is based on properties of truth, so don't expect Floo to have a clue about what you are saying!

Then be a good chap and list these properties: then we can explore them one by one.

Like Sass you don't have a clue what you are talking about either. You both state as fact things which are only a matter of belief.
And is this a matter of your belief (or your opinion), or can you back it up to show that it is indeed fact?

You seem to be begging the question (a fallacy) in presuming that beliefs and/or opinions require 'facts': they don't, and this is especially the case where someone has absence of beliefs in x.

Please outline your beliefs floo.

Can't speak for Floo but for me:

I believe, I believe what the old man said
Though I know that there's no lord above
I believe in me, I believe in you
And you know I believe in love
I believe in truth though I lie a lot
I feel the pain from the push and shove
No matter what you put me through
I'll still believe in love

(Sorry couldn't resist)
