The end of special privilege for groups that practice discrimination, by the sounds of things.

A stall at a Freshers fair a special privilege. That's completely potty.  Sounds more like God Dodging of Religionethics proportions.

Another demo of how clueless you are about religious privillege, secularism and it seems you're a Gardian reader too.

A decision which, according to this morning's news, has been reversed.

So nothing to see here, move along please. Shame you are still failing to find evidence of religions being trampled under the foot of wicked secularism. Of course we can provide numerous examples of religious groups gaining special privileges, from special tax exemptions through to exemption of equalities legislation, that are not afforded to non religious organisations.

And no doubt this Christian groups benefits too - they will likely claim the right to discriminate on the grounds of sexuality, and belief, in a manner that wouldn't be allowed for other student groups. Do you think the student pot-holing society would get away with claiming that homosexuality is wrong, or engaging in primary or secondary discrimination against some religious groups. Not on your nelly.

They were offered a place on a stall at the Fresher's Fair, but they wanted the opportunity to man it, and to be separate from the other religious associations, and they threw their toys out the pram when they were told they would be treated like everyone else.

No, a stall at the Fresher's Fair isn't special privilege, but being treated differently to other, similar groups would have been.

I hope you realise that what you are describing could describe an effort to deprive all religions of something secular stalls could have been allowed.

Was there something withheld from the religious?

Yes. Was there a justification given for that, like something along the lines of 'we're a place of welcome for all, and some of our students feel implicitly judged and besmirched by formal religious institutions, and so whilst we're not going to ban you outright, we're going to limit your involvement so that it's not as overt?' Sounds like a reasonable accommodation to me.

Yes, with a justification. Whether you think that justification is sufficient is a matter of opinion, as is usually the case when conflicting rights and freedoms have to be judged against one another.

Old news. When I was at University in the mid 80's the CU was banned from all SU activities because they didn't elect their president democratically.

Being president of that society wasn't very popular because your year in charge usually ended up with being ceremonially strung up from a lamp post with piano wire.

This was a dummy-spitting exercise on the part of the CU, no more:

Quote
... the CU was told that a single multi-faith stall would be allowed to display leaflets, though no representatives would be allowed to staff it, according to leaked emails seen by the paper. Balliol CU boycotted this option.

So the CU decided that it had to be a stall all of their very very own, or nothing. A comparison involving toy balls and homes springs to mind.

All too often a person's religious beliefs have been used as an excuse for bigotry, like being anti-gay, for instance. This isn't acceptable and should be cracked down upon.

Is someone taking bets on how long it is before you get accused of "special pleading" for atheism and who makes it?

That's the sort of statement that gives aid and comfort to the bigoted idiots who like to whinge about "liberal intolerance". People have a right to be miserable, joyless, narrow-minded bigots.

Psalm 2King James Version (KJV)

2 Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?

2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying,

3 Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.

4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.

5 Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.

6 Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.

7 I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.

8 Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.

9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.

10 Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth.

11 Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.

12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.
