Frankly my dear I don't give a tram
« on: October 30, 2017, 05:58:52 PM »
Is the decision of the German railway company to name a train after Anne Frank more tasteless than the title of this thread?

Personally, I think it's a lot of fuss over nothing, but I admit that if I had been in charge of picking the names for the trains and somebody had pointed out that Anne Frank went to Auschwitz on a train, I might have quietly dropped her.

If the train stopped at Auschwitz or similar, then yes. Otherwise say somewhere decided to call a street Anne Frank Strasse and someone said you do realise she walked in the concentration camp!!! Can't have Anne Frank on a stamp because the Nazis used stamps!!!

She wasn't posted to Auschwitz so not a true comparison.

It was affectionately known as the Anne Frank machine 😱

Ummm, yes. NS made the comparison between her name being on a train and on a stamp.  She was taken to Auschwitz by train but not sent in the post, hence my post.

You referred to her name being on a stamp and compared this to her name being on a train didn't you?

Yes. That isn't an statement or implication that she was posted, is it?

Having some similarities does not mean everthing is the same, does it?

You do understand how analogies and metaphors work, don't you?

The complaints relate to the link between her name and a train since she was transported to Auschwitz by train. You used the analogy of her name on a stamp. There is no connection between a stamp and her transport to Auschwitz since she wasn't sent there by post. Hence a poor analogy and in correct comparison. Do you not understand that point?

I understand you think analogy and metaphor are about exact similarities. I understand you are wrong. Do you? (Note that was already asked but you just ignored the questions)

I understand what analogies and metaphors are. The point of analogies is to point out similarities. The use of Anne Franks name on a stamp is not similar to its use on a train. Your analogy was poor as it did not indicate similarities. Do you not understand the point?

Nazis used things, that's the analogy. It wasn't the only one in the post. It is similar, it is the not the same. Showing a difference in some way is missing the point of analogy and metaphor. Love may be like oxygen but it isn't a chemical element.

Did the Nazis not have mail trains?

Actually the analogy was between

  • Anne Frank's name being put on a train and her being transported by train
  • Anne Frank's name being put on a stamp and the Nazis using stamps

There was no suggestion that Anne Frank was ever mailed anywhere. I do agree though that the analogy is less than perfect because the salient point of the story is that Anne Frank's name is being put on a train and there is a direct connection between Anne Frank, trains and concentration camps. Whereas there is no such direct connection between Anne Frank, stamps and concentration camps so far as I know.

No more tasteless than Ruskin College naming a residential hall "Biko". As an aside, there would be a big row if they chose to rename a building after David Kitson.
