Some people seriously do try it on.  A 2:1 is great.

So he didn't get a post-grad Ivy League place, so what, he must have had plenty of other options.  What's more he's left it far too long.

A disappointed and demoralised man with mental health problems who obviously needs help which is sad - he's brassic and unemployed.

Sueing the uni after so many years will do him no favours.

Universities - and Oxbridge in particular - are places where one goes to "read" for a degree. They are places of learning, not teaching. The primary role of academic staff is to create the circumstances in which learning can take place. This ... err ... sad individual has no-one to blame but himself. It may be that his degree class reflects his performance and capabilities adequately.

Having said that, it is the case that - due to the fees now imposed upon people attending institutions of higher education -  many individuals no longer perceive themselves to be students but customers ... consumers.

No doubt, after he has lost his court case and been faced with considerable costs, he will sue the judge for behaving unfairly by not siding with him.

I think the idea that teaching isn't important in terms of a skill at university is dreadful. I remember lecturers who could barely speak coherently. But it's the same for every one.

"Skills" are acquired by practice. The teacher's role is to provide the circumstances where the skill can be practised and feedback and evaluation offered. The individual in this case read Modern History - in itself not a practical subject. However, the purpose of much of higher education is to develop the general skills of analysis, evaluation and creativity - using an academic discipline as a context.

It would appear to me that Mr Saddiqui's evaluation skills are not well developed.

I think Walter probably meant that students should expect lecturers/tutors to be good at their jobs, especially as university is such a costly business. Some are good of course & others abysmal, many students have a moan.  My view is that at that level students are expected to be capable of independent research and evaluation. Those who move on to professional qualifications are virtually on their own & working at the same time!

A 2:1 is certainly not to be sneezed at. Many high fliers, politicians, captains of industry have done well with less. He wasn't prepared to look at all the options for someone with a very decent degree like his.

The majority of teachers I had dealings with were both intelligent and of course educated, but there were a surprising number and not just the ones I had a difference with, that weren't front line, perhaps in battle it would have been best to put them in the front line when facing an enemy, their families may have missed them.

Even though I have teachers in my close family I still couldn't help noticing when working with quite a number teachers over the years there seems to me to be a misconceived idea prevalent within the teaching profession that once they have their relevant degree, miraculously all at the same time they seem to have acquired the full knowledge of the whole of the universe, consequently I often found myself and my working partner when working with teachers, doing our best to sweep around them, politely of course.

Not all teachers are as I described above are as bad as that but there are still a significant number exactly as I have described

In my close family there were two head teachers , one who had gone into it late having spent his previous working life in the gas fitting industry ( and I don't mean the bloke who comes round your house to fit a new boiler) and one who went into teaching straight from university
The gap between their understanding of reality was immense and quite amusing at times round the dinner table .

When our eldest girl was ten they had a female teacher who couldn't control the class, which was in chaos. She and several other children went to see the head and demanded something was done about it. The teacher was sacked; our daughter and other of the brighter pupils were moved into the top class. She had a remarkable male teacher who became a family friend until he died of old age several years ago.

That female teacher you speak of Floo, was she cross eyed? Only there was a cross eyed teacher that couldn't control her pupils, I've heard of her
