Are you an 'anywhere' or a 'somewhere'?

Far broader in scope than politics (hence General), a striking comment from the introduction to the 34th British Social Attitudes survey:

For some, the country is divided into what author David Goodhart calls the ‘anywheres’ and ‘somewheres’; a split evident in the EU vote (Goodhart, 2017). ‘Anywheres’ are the degree-educated geographically mobile who embrace new people and experiences, and define themselves by their achievements. In contrast, ‘somewheres’ have an identity rooted in their hometown and find rapid change, such as that brought on by immigration, unsettling.

Others have drawn parallels with the US and suggested we might be beginning our own ‘culture wars’ (Bagehot, 2017). Here the dividing lines are no longer class or left versus right, but a clash between liberalism and a resurgent conservatism, with the latter angered by issues like same-sex marriage and a sense of runaway multiculturalism.

Anywhere versus somewhere. hmmm.

I am a mixture of both I think. Firmly rooted as I am in the area where I was born, comfortable with it, even like it. At the same time I like new people, travelling, feel comfortable with some change.

I think the pace of change is too fast now - does that make me a 'somewhere'?

I like multl-culturalism and same-sex marriage(natch) does that make me an 'anywhere' ?

I  voted to stay in the EU - but would like some control on the movement of people - is that an 'anywhere' or a 'somewhere' position?

Sounds all a bit simplistic to me.

I think a great bulk of people would see themselves as a mixture of the two - I know I do - perhaps with a preponderance of one over the other.

I wasn't shooting anyone. Just responding to the article. I agree I think everyone would be a mixture of the two - which is why I think it is far too simplistic.

You might just as well sing "You're everywhere and nowhere baby, that's where you're at" it makes about as much sense.

In my experience people tend to identify with, and be proud of their home town rather more when they are living a long way from it. Yes there are exceptions , I knew a bloke from Sunderland who loathed the place & always referred to it as "Blunderland", but as a rule absence makes the heart grow fonder.

I don't think that's the case at all - people's tolerance of and appetite for change varies. I don't see why there wouldn't be some people who embrace the pace of change completely.

I like my home island, but pride doesn't come into it. I detest patriotism!
