Twas ever thus, though.
Flag waving has been a sad sight at Old Firm games for too long - even though none of them wereactually Scottish flags.
Today's storm in a shortbread tin was juast that - since the monarch was quite happy to see the Lion Rampant (part of her standard in Scotland) replace the butchers apron as far back as 2009.
I dunno why it became such a stushie today...except that Ruth davidson opened her mouth and put her foot in it as per usual.

Sadly what the Russia Today poodle has to say is of little interest, but overall looks like a bit of fake news, which is never good.

Do you dispute the point that Elizabeth Windsor sanctioned the flying of the Lion Rampant - which has marked both the royal standard and Scottish sovriegnty since the time of William 'the Lion' in the thirteenth century - rather than the Union flag, which has nothing to do with royalty?

Has there ever been a more pointless story.

Firstly because getting exercised about what flags get run up any given flagpole at any given time is the preserve of the jingoists and petty nationalists and we have far, far more important things to deal with.

Secondly because this change (for those sad enough to care about such things) happened years ago.

If you have a flag-pole it seems appropriate for it to be used for all sorts of purposes throughout the year, whether flying national or EU flags, flags that give support to minority groups etc (gay rainbow) and all sorts of other uses in between. Anyone who holds hard and fast rules about what flags should, and should not, be allowed to be flown and when really does need to get a life.

The priest of a church not far from where I live used to fly the flag of Sinn Fein and it caused a riot.

Astonishing that nearly 100 years later people still give a shit about such things.

Indeed - and that is the problem - flags become politicised, which is bad, and weaponised which is worse.

Sinn Fein is not an innocuous organisation.

In Texas, I asked to be excused from serving a customer who wore a Sinn Fein/IRA tattoo (and YES it bore both names)

The Hispanic manageress served the customer instead, she understood my situation.

Can't argue with that. England has a rightly proud reputation as a nation.
Mind you, I'd draw the line at "Scotland the Brave"...hey, even the chap who wrote it, Cliff Hanley, threatened to jump out of the box if the thing were played at his funeral! He wrote the words in five minutes as a variety-style review filler.
(I'm not a great fan of "Flower of Scotland" either, mind - even though I was honoured to have met the late Roy Williamson, who wrote it, on many occasions. I prefer the late Hamish Henderson's anti-war, internationalist "The-Freedom-come-all-ye"...great words, great sentiment and superb tune!)
