"Farewell" Videos

It doesn't. we were asked our opinion of farewell videos. I gave mine.

You said modern technology shouldn't play a part. That goes beyond farewell videos.

Rationality has nothing to do with either side of the question.

That's the problem isn't it. People don't think rationally about funerals.

For example, I used to think about what I'd like to happen at my funeral but, thinking rationally, I'm the one person who's guaranteed not to be there, so why should my opinion carry any weight? They can do what they like.

I’ve left basic instructions because if I don’t make plans there could be conflict. My atheist kids are all minors (just) so my Christian parents would probably be the ones to do the planning. The kids would hate a Christian service.

Not that anticipate for this to ever be necessary.

There's nothing anyone can do for the body in the box. The funeral service, be it religious or secular, is there for the family, and if the family derive comfort froma 'traditional' funeral, so be it. However, if the family want innovations in music or coffin design, or whatever, fair enough - that's what they feel would ease thier feeling and help the grieving process. I've conducted a few funerals now as a reader, some 'traditional' some not so traditional...the only line I'd draw is the fact that I don't , and won't, do a secular funeral. The rest is up to the family of the deceased. It's their day, not mine.

There is something in that, but most families would want the dead person's wishes respected, if they expressed any in advance - which is somewhat circular, but there it is.

I've only attended one funeral where there was one of these videos played and I hate to say it but it was horrendous. It was on a huge screen at one end of the room. The video was silent but had a musical overlay that was far too loud, so anyone trying to have a conversation was shouting to be heard. It ran for roughly 30mins but then replayed over and over. After a couple of hours and on the third replay I said to the OH.... gotta get outta 'ere!

Hi all

There has been a growing trend over the past few years for a person to record a "Farewell" video, to be played after their death, in some cases at a service (if allowed) in other cases at home.

Do posters like this idea?

Not sure if a good idea. Depends if they want a living will so to speak where they tell everyone what they are getting and why.
It is a good idea to leave a video if you have not told your family about your up coming death, I am guessing if you don't tell them then you feel they don't care or just protecting them when in truth you are not. Just say your goodbyes and have it done with,
