"Farewell" Videos
« on: January 30, 2018, 01:10:31 PM »
Hi all

There has been a growing trend over the past few years for a person to record a "Farewell" video, to be played after their death, in some cases at a service (if allowed) in other cases at home.

Do posters like this idea?

No, too morbid for my taste.

No, I don't like the idea but if people want to do it I don't think it's wrong, wouldn't criticise them for it.

My own view is that I would prefer to be remembered as being handsome & healthy, rather than as a sick old man lacking hair & teeth.

But some like the idea...Bernard Manning being one.

I'd find that quite creepy to be honest.

It's amazing the things they can do with cosmetic surgery these days and they can also do some considerable feats with just make up when you're laid out in the box, you should be able to find these people locally H

Kind regards ippy

OK so "Ippy in a box" underneath Ippy on a screen above would be ok for you?

TBH the idea of sending a "farewell" message to my friends & loved ones does seem rather crass & a little creepy, I would hope that I was at least compos mentis enough to say goodbye to my friends & loved ones whilst I was alive, rather than from my funeral service. However, if I was told by my doctor that my faculties were leaving me, then I might record a short, and mostly lighthearted, film, before I was incapable of doing so.

It's not for me and I've no problem with the idea either.

I wonder if I could record a message and have my body turned into an animatronic to deliver it. I imagine the effect on the attendees of my funeral will be quite profound when I sit up in my coffin and start lip syncing Auld Lang Syne.

The delivery might be a bit stiff.

If anything should be absolutely traditional, it's a funeral, and that isn't traditional, so no.

Why should a funeral be 'absolutely tradiotonal'? And what does that mean to you?

I’m not a Christian, and not a humanist. What is ‘traditional’ for me?

I found this quite moving, don't know if it applies to you Rhi.  Every religion or belief has some sort of tradition I suppose.

Because it's a funeral. To me, it means the traditional service of the person's religion or denomination. Non-believers will have to do something different, but modern technology should not have a part.

So the reason a funeral should be absolutely traditional is that it is a funeral and funerals should be absolutely traditional, hmmm.

Given that tradition is a thing that evolved, surely it is then traditional for it to evolve?

Yes, but evolution is slow.
Obviously, my answer was somewhat circular. I realised it at the time. If you don't think funerals should be traditional, I'm not likely to convince you otherwise, so I was being facetious.

To you yes. Why should you're opinion apply to anybody else? Once upon a time, crematoria were modern technology. So were coffins. Your opinion is irrational.

If you're a bit iffy about a farewell video, this'll tip you over the edge..... https://abcnews.go.com/Technology/high-tech-headstones-speak-grave/story?id=10078212
"for, as long as but a hundred of us remain alive, never will we on any conditions be brought under English rule. It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom - for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself."

The traditional ‘left on a hilltop and picked clean by birds’ isn’t available at the Co- op.

It doesn't. we were asked our opinion of farewell videos. I gave mine.

Rationality has nothing to do with either side of the question.

There's nothing anyone can do for the body in the box. The funeral service, be it religious or secular, is there for the family, and if the family derive comfort froma 'traditional' funeral, so be it. However, if the family want innovations in music or coffin design, or whatever, fair enough - that's what they feel would ease thier feeling and help the grieving process. I've conducted a few funerals now as a reader, some 'traditional' some not so traditional...the only line I'd draw is the fact that I don't , and won't, do a secular funeral. The rest is up to the family of the deceased. It's their day, not mine.
