Very interesting LR. The film will soon be available to download or on DVD so can be watched even if not in cinema. From what I've just read, the film (to me) seems dark and creepy, not at all what I thought it would be.

There's something sinister about an organisation like Core Issues Trust that is obsessed with one issue.

If you scroll down a bit, on the right is a 'featured video' about the film.

This stuff keeps coming up like a bad penny.   Some Christians not only think that gay is bad, but that it should be 'cured'.   Very dangerous actually, which is why it is banned in all UK therapy organizations.

Quite right too Wiggs. When one reads and hears about what homosexuals had to go through in the past, with 'treatment', it's heartbreaking. Alan Turing was one such person and Frankie Howard voluntarily tried a 'cure' which was horrendous and, frankly, scandalous.

This film seems to take it to a new, political, level. I will certainly watch it (when it can be downloaded for free), just so I know exactly what it is all about & what we are up against.

There was a famous case, where a journalist posed as a gay client, and went to a 'gay cure' counsellor, where she wanted to pray for him, and told him that he was gay probably because of his distant father, and even suggested that he had been sexually abused.   Eventually, she was struck off as totally unprofessional, which it is.   And very dangerous.

I think also some of the evangelical gay-haters have been touring Africa, trying to help with homophobic legislation.

Do you mean Alan Turing and Frankie Howard's 'treatment' LR?

Alan Turing had 'organo-therapy', a type of chemical castration. It was court ordered after he was caught with a man.  He suffered terribly - physically - because of the medication and committed suicide two years later.

Frankie Howard put himself under the care of a psychiatrist who practised a type of intensive conversion therapy, which was horrendous. It was commonly believed that homosexuality was a mental illness.

Obviously treatment didn't work in either case.

Wigginhall I am so glad that counsellor has been struck off.  This bit of the article you linked to is informative:-

"This week California passed a law banning the use of conversion therapy on minors. (Thanks in part to the campaigning by the international gay rights group All Out, who are now focusing their efforts in Europe). This much-needed piece of legislation will prevent countless young kids being subjected to treatment that leaves the majority of them with worsened mental health – as the clinical psychologists Shidlo and Schroeder concluded in their 2002 study. They found what I found when people contacted me about their experiences: depression, suicide attempts, and self-harm. It takes victims years to recover from being told they’re evil and sick and broken. Many never do."

Yes, it can worsen depression a lot, as the assumption of a lot of gay cure is that gay is bad.

It's very difficult to make it illegal, as there are genuine sex therapists who discuss sexuality with clients.   Well, nearly all therapists do that actually.   So you do get gay people who say, 'I'm not sure whether I'm gay or not', but of course, the gay cure counsellor wants them not to be gay!

Therapists have to be impartial, their role is to gently support and encourage their clients to work things out for themselves, make their own decisions.

Hypothetically, if there was conversion therapy to cure people of being heterosexual, it's quite obvious it wouldn't work! I'm a straight woman, have never felt anything remotely sexual for a girl, and the idea of me being treated to turn gay is ridiculous. So why does anyone think it works the other way around?

Interesting that Sigmund Freud believed that homosexuality was perfectly natural and did not believe it was a condition to be cured.

LR, there was a dramatised documentary about Frankie Howerd on TV some years ago, called, "Rather you than me", which showed the psychiatric treatment he underwent including being medicated with LSD. It's worth watching.  He absolutely hated being gay.

True about Freud, but unfortunately, psychoanalysis, especially in the US, became very homophobic during the 50s and 60s.  I think things are a lot better now however.   And in the UK, I remember quite homophobic remarks by therapists not that long ago, but again, it has improved.   A friend of mine in training was told just not to mention it, don't ask, don't tell, kind of thing.  I used to be on the books at Pink Therapy, although not gay.

I think homosexuality was taken off DSM in 1987, quite late.   (Classification of mental disorders).

How glad I am that nowadays two people of the same sex can settle down openly as a couple without fear. They don't have to pretend to be what they're not or try to change what they are.  Frankie Howerd hated being gay, if he was a young man now he wouldn't.

Groups like 'Core Issues Trust' want to drag us back to the dark ages. They are sinister.

To have never heard of The Human Centipede is a blessing. From what I know about the film, I cannot conceive that anyone would ever even want to see it.

FTR the only person that I know who actually saw this film was one of the Receptionists at work, who saw it with her boyfriend. I am not alone in thinking that she was trying to dump him.
