Is RC church an 'empire of misogyny'?
« on: March 08, 2018, 03:27:05 PM »

Certainly their actions here seem to back up the charge

It's all a bit sad - for all that Frankie is having his effigy burnt amongst those who think he is betraying the church this seems to underline the institutional problems it has. The RC church celebrates International Women's Day/

On the other hand, Mother Theresa was fast-tracked to sainthood, whereas Oscar Romero has had to wait quite a long time.
Can't help thinking the latter was more deserving, not that such posthumous honours will help either of them.

As for living women in the Church, I don't suppose there's been much advance since the days of Hildegard of Bingen.

Pity about Frankie's attitude - he has up to now seemed rather a good egg, in comparison with some of his recent predecessors.

Unfortunately the RC Church and the Papacy have so far to travel to get into the 21st Century that the changes they have made are so small as to be, to all intents and purposes, invisible!

The RC Church is I think, the only dictatorship still in existence after 2,000 years.

The day the RCC appoints a woman pope will be the day its catches up with modern times.

Wouldn't it have made a slightly better title if you had put up something like 'Has the R C Church given up on misogyny yet?.'

Might not his problem be similar to that of Theresa May in the Conservative Party?  That there are paleolithic throwbacks in the Curia who will make his attempts to align his organisation with the values and practices of the 21st Century impossible to achieve that he has to move slowly and cautiously in consequence?

To be fair to Frankie it must be admitted that this comparison with Theresa May is not a particularly good one - she is manifestly out of her depth and minimally competent whereas he does give the impression that he knows what he is doing ...

There is also the difference that May is a Tory, while Francis is a decent bloke.

And yet he's taking the position here which appears to be misogynistic.

The problem here is that it's not his decent blokeness that works if he as his holinessabounds is the person in charge of an 'empire of misogyny'

Your grammar has faults - it should be "I and Mary Poppins". Just Mary Poppins, then.

Yep, let's concentrate on a flippant use of grammar to avoid whether the RC church is an 'empire of misogyny'.

Somebody using a ploy to deflect from an institutional issue in a world view community? How does that feel?

Why?
That's their interpretation of Scripture in the light of tradition.
It's not an interpretation I share - far from it - but why should they adapt to 'modern times', in your view?
"for, as long as but a hundred of us remain alive, never will we on any conditions be brought under English rule. It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom - for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself."

Steve H,

Should it?
You wouldn't say "me am exempt"; therefore you don't say "me and Mary Poppins are exempt".

Yes I know but nor should it be "I and Mary Poppins" as your "correction" suggested: it's "Mary Poppins and I".

"Mary Poppins and I" is politer, putting her first, but "I and Mary Poppins" is grammatically acceptable.

I am not defending the RC Church's stance on women, but why should it, or any other institution, "catch up with modern times"? Do you think that, after millennia of making a balls-up of things, humanity has suddenly got everything right?

I presume that made some sense in your head? Anyway, the RC church here, 'Empire of misogyny'?
