I see the treasury is going to review the status of one and two pence coins. They are also considering £50 notes, which aren't very popular either.

Hello LR! Haven't seen you today.
When I saw the thread title my first thought was you meant police officers :-).

I collect 1 and 2p coins in a big jar & when full I give it to someone who collects for a local charity (first transferring the coins to a sturdy carrier bag so I can re-use the jar).

Should never have got rid of one pound notes. Nothing more annoying than having a pocket full of pound coins.

Makes a little sense, I suppose.
The 1p feels very like a 5p if your hands are frozen.
By the way, if the treasury in England ditches the £50 note, they have no say in Scotland - where you can still get a few £1 notes, as well as £50 and £100 notes.

For quite a lot on here, they got rid of the penny they were used to as a child many years ago. Can't even get a guy for a penny anymore.

Born '75, so too young for pre-decimalisation money, though I have a collection at home. I do remember 5p's with one shilling written in it.

There’s a little old amusement place I go to in Norfolk that has loads of twopenny push machines. Reckon two thirds of their business will go if they get rid of copper coins.

So they still have 'em though. Good. I remember getting one pound a week pocket money, spending 50p on football stickers (which were 10p a packet) and 50p on penny sweets. Going to the cornershop, fizzy cola bottles and all that, stuffing my pockets full of sweets when the owner was out the back. Those were the days!

Apparently not going to happen. I don't really understand why it's been ruled out so quickly. I suppose it's an attempt to look decisive but it merely looks scared.

Agree but that underlines why they appeared scared. It wasn't even a proposal just something to be considered. If policy on relatively unimportant items gets decided before any consideration because they have too many headaches, then the decisionson the difficult items becomes harder, not easier.

I can remember the clippies on the bus didn't like it if you gave them any farthings in your change, the ones with a relief picture of a Robin on them.

I didn't realise farthings weren't taken out of circulation until 1969, the year I married.

Talking of old coins have any of you come across a square 10/- coin? Guernsey produced them in 1966, when I was 16. My Dad collected quite a few of them, which were divided up between my sisters and myself after his death in 2005. I have one stuck on my bedroom door. I will give my five grandchildren one each. I am not sure what they are worth, probably not that much as so many were produced.
