Surely, this isn't about Science and Technology but about a remarkable human being who just happened to be a scientist. Should it not be in the General Discussion section?

I recall seeing an episode of Star Trek where Data was playing poker with Stephen Hawking and Isaac Newton - an indication of the popular perception of Stephen Hawking. Both he and Newton had occupied the most prestigious academic chair in the world - Lucasian Professor of Mathematics.

We should celebrate his contributions to science, and admire him for his courage and determination and humanity.

Hawking was the best scientist since Einstein, apparently. He has had a remarkable career for one so disabled.

Stupendous mind, with the ability to laugh at himself, a wonderful communicator in his discipline. And he was on Star Trek.
"for, as long as but a hundred of us remain alive, never will we on any conditions be brought under English rule. It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom - for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself."

Dear Forum,

Just to say it is a crying shame that this great mind has left us, but I have been reading all about him this morning, I read his Brief History of Time and like most of the planet only understood about a tenth of what he was saying.

On reflection, I don't think he has really left us, like my wee hero Albert, his work and great quotes will live on, a life worth celebrating.

On humanity:

Quote
"We are just an advanced breed of monkeys on a minor planet of a very average star. But we can understand the Universe. That makes us something very special"

Interview in Der Spiegel, October 1988

I would have used my very favourite quote from the man but I would like this thread to be a celebration of his life. :)

Gonnagle.

PS: His Brief History of Time is being discussed on radio 2 at this very moment

No I think it is the other way around.

In other words that he was a remarkable scientist who also had to overcome massive challenges due to his disability.

Had he not been disabled he would still have been a remarkable scientist.

Turns out I can't. I'll just have to let the mods do it, if they want to.

It is interesting. Just because a person is disabled they shouldn't be treated differently to others, or considered 'special'. I treat my husband just the same as I did before he became brain damaged. I don't pity him, I tell him like it is, ok it doesn't always make me popular, but that is far better than treating him differently now.

I think he's being a bit silly about that cartoon. Of course living in a wheelchair is undesirable, and not as good as being able-bodied. Why else is research to find a cure for spinal cord injury and various progressive diseases such as MND going on?

Stephen Hawking has died age 76

It is sad news but what an amazing life he has had for one so severely disabled yet abled.
He fought valiantly and I pray he is at peace and rest.
We know we have to work together to abolish war and terrorism to create a compassionate  world in which Justice and peace prevail. Love ;D   Einstein
