Absolutely horrendous. Thoughts are with all those involved.

Totally agree. My family was caught in major fire in Provence in 1993. We were camping and spent the night on a beach looking at the hillsides on fire. We returned to the campsite to find that our plot was unaffected but tents and caravans just 10 metres away were totally destroyed. The destruction continued over three days as the fires moved inland.

We were able to marvel at nature's power of regeneration as the the area recovered over the following four years.

Leaving the terrible human (and other animal) cost to one side just for a moment, a major fire is about one of the best things to happen to soil and vegetation, in forests especially.
Pain, or damage, don't end the world. Or despair, or fucking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man, and give some back. - Al Swearengen, Deadwood.

In some places it is essential.

Yeah, I know   :(

Not being very much of a people person I suppose I concentrate on the scientific side of things and try to take the bird's-eye view - forest fires are horrendous disasters for people and other animals but in the long term benefit soil fertility and contribute to renewed growth. But of course you're right.

They've now arrested four people for arson. The suspicion is that they wanted to loot abandoned properties.

If guilty they should serve a whole life term.

If guilty they should serve a whole life term.
If these fires that caused the deaths of 80 or more people were started deliberately, then I think you are correct that the arsonists should face life sentences.
