So called Smart Meters?

One thing I found on changing from one supplier to another was that Smart Meters aren't compatible.

I already had smart meters from one company changed supplier and had to have another two new Smart meters fitted?

As I understand these meters have a sim card and use the established mobile phone network to enable them to send regular readings to the supplier, assuming I'm right about the sim card what's so difficult about the design of smart meters that wont leave them able to just have the sim card exchanged when the customer changes supplier?

Perhaps it might have just been a peculiarity the two suppliers involved in my case, has any one else had a similar experience to me and am I wrong about just changing the sim and why isn't changing supplier just a matter of sim/meter compatibility?

It seems so straightforward to me, I suspect screwing customer comes in somewhere or am I being paranoid? (Who said that!!).

I'd be interested to hear about any of the experiences of any one else?

We have a smart meter, I have no idea what the reading means, as maths and I are at greatly at odds. However, my husband likes to keep a check on it, making complicated graphs recording our energy use.

Every time I receive a circular about a smart meter it goes in bin. Apparently there isn't much advantage to having one, maybe someone living on their own and using less would benefit. Anyway I can't be bothered. If it became law to have one I'd do it but as it is I'm not going to make appointment to have a smart meter installed.I've also seen also adverts about 'smart water' which somehow prevents burglaries! No idea what that is.

We have a water meter, which is compulsory, unfortunately.

Sorry to go off topic.

It is a fluid which can be painted on nickable items. When it dries it leaves a deposit invisible to the eye but which includes information similar to a barcode which uniquely identifies the owner. When a particular light source is used the "barcode" can be seen, read by a computer and the good returned to its owner.

I believe that police forces now routine check suspicious items.

Thanks for that HH. Now I know (probably it was explained to me before but I didn't take it in). I don't have lots of valuables so won't bother. However I see signs all over the place locally advertising smart water.

(Water? What's that? We do have some falling from the sky today thankfully and I don't care if it is smart or stupid.)

Why?

We had one fitted and we are significantly better off on a meter than under the system before. And that's even with watering the garden in this hot spell.

Yeah, you're prob'ly right. I don't think of household items (microwaves spring to mind), as being valuable and my incomplete china eating stuff you can find in any charity shop. Bikes? Maybe. They are in the garage and garage has belt and braces. Tablets, laptops, TVs - yes I suppose so but if someone goes in from the back and exits via front drive, people will see.I don't have cctv but others do. Though I do have paintings and a few bits of antique stuff which I love, I don't think they are worth much in monetary value. My jewellery is lovely but certainly not way expensive. Still, you never know!

My car (not car I currently own), was nicked twice, once from public parking space and once from front drive - I got one back but not the other - insurance payout was very fair though.

I think it would be worth more than a what a burglar's prepared to risk for one or two of them to break into our house (not easy). The only thing that would worry me would be if I was indoors when a burglar came in! Not likely to happen - but could. I don't dwell on it.

What is a "pup" apart from small animal?

I thought how ridiculous it is as it seems to be that each utility supplier has it's own set of meters that are not compatible any other suppliers meters?

It is very hot here in SW France. The heat affects co-ordination and perception, And my attention is sometimes affected by strident demands from my grandchildren.  I meant to type "pub".

'Pup' was likely to be an urban name for a getaway vehicle, that I'd never heard of!
