What would you do?
« on: July 31, 2018, 10:04:16 AM »
In the shock that odd the casual violence in this video, where some bloke thinks that being pulled up on sexual harassment justifies violence, it's interesting that people have been attacking the people in the cafe for not doing more, and that the woman attacked has stepped up to defend them. I think that being primed to the incident and watching it picked out on the video puts one in a very different position to sitting in the cafe not knowing there is about to be an 'incident'. Even in my primed state I missed the throwing of the ashtray the first time.

I have always stood up for myself in abusive situations.

I think the thing that stands out for me is that nobody is obviously looking after the victim, although maybe the woman nearest to her did ask if she is ok. But what would I do... really don't think you can tell until you are in that situation.

Actually this reminds me of when I was physically assaulted by an older homeless woman at Tottenham Court Road tube when I was 16. She clearly wasn't well, called me by some woman's name and pulled my hair. Everyone looked away, including a police officer (although maybe he didn't see it) and I was so shocked and embarrassed I just kept going like nothing had happened.

I don't think you can read too much into that - as the bloke who was about to wade in with a chair demonstrates, I suspect that the adrenaline takes over and the instinct is to go after the perp first.

True. I never have been, and hope I never am.

I was pleasantly surprised as at least a couple of the men were prepared to confront him, the guy who picked up the chair for instance. As NS says we have the benefit of hindsight. These things happen so quickly that very often there is a lag between the action and any response.

I'm not reading too much into it in the sense that I think it means anything - it's just how it happened.
