Free sanitary products for Scottish students

Maybe they should provide free condoms as well!

I think this is a little OTT, as better off students can afford to buy their own.

Means testing is generally inefficient and puts off people claiming who might be entitled, particularly given that we are still as a society somewhat squeamish about talking about periods.  I don't see condoms as equivalent to sanitary products.

That was me being sarcastic! I didn't realise, as Shaker suggests, they are already free!

There are very few 'better off' students these days. Maybe some who went to Cheltenham Ladies' College, but that's about it.

Can I suggest you do a wee bit of research before you 'think' anything? I know North Ayrshire - very well indeed - as it happens. I know the horrendous poverty issues there, the lack of high waged families, the terrifying growth in food banks in Irvine, Largs, Kilwining, Ardrossan, even relatively rich Fairlie. If it's a choice between eating and sanitation, which do you choose? That these products should be available to all, without exception, dispenses ith the stigma of having to ask for them...means testing addind to embarassment. I believe the Scottish government aims to have this scheme rolled out throughout the nation - and I think it's a great idea.

It certainly is a good idea! I presume there will be a room in each college and school where girls can just go and pick them up and if they are free for everyone, no embarrassment.  Food banks accept sanitary products as donations too but that's a different matter.

Littleroses, all contraception is freely available. I wondered where people could pick up free condoms so I googled:-

most GP surgeries – talk to your GP or practice nurse.
community contraceptive clinics.
some genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinics.
sexual health clinics – these offer contraceptive and STI testing services.
some young people's services.

Not that straightforward so hardly surprising they are on sale everywhere and people do buy them with their shopping rather than making a trip to one of the above.

I linked recently to some football clubs that are making free sanitary products available to female fans. The campaign started in Scotland.
