'Fifth of 14-year-old girls in UK 'self-harm''
« on: August 29, 2018, 12:40:08 PM »

Unfortunately I managed to hear how John Humphrys treated this issue on Radio 4 Today. Basically it's always happened, they are just shallow scratches and 14 year olds are always difficult.

TBH I do not agree with the "gender stereotyping" which strikes me being somebody's agenda.

IMHO part of the problem is this relatively new phenomenon of considering teenagers as being "children".

Self harming wasn't this much of a thing when I was at school.

Glad I didn't have to listen to Humphreys. He's had his day, surely? So out of touch.

I think he thinks he's being edgy when he's just being an eejit.

I'm surprised the number of self harmers is so high. I've known a couple of people, my age, who self harmed at times in their lives when they were in great distress. Cuts and cigarette burns. Can't say I knew any at school which doesn't mean there weren't any.

It's very worrying to think so many are doing it now.

Many of those who completed the survey may only have done it once, doesn't mean they are persistent self harmers.

I did know people who self harmed. But by being a 'thing' now I meant that it is something that is discussed, shared, even put on Snapchat and Instagram. Some even egg each other on.

Yes! It's almost fashionable and glamourous in a dark, morbid way, like many other things.

It's also a form of identifying with a group, a subculture. It can be a means to inclusion.
