Sports journalism is so often just typing, McIlvanney made it great

Hugh who?
I once tried using "chicken" as a password, but was told it must contain a capital so I tried "chickenkiev"
On another occasion, I tried "beefstew", but was told it wasn't stroganoff.

Hugh who?
There are few posts more tedious than people displaying their ignorance of someone who died by asking 'who'.

One of McIlvanney's best known pieces. Huge sense of ambivalence, brilliantly expressed.

Hugh who?

One of the best writers on sport in English.  Probably ranking with Neville Cardus.
They were the footprints of a gigantic hound!

Not being a sports fan, of ANY sport, I didn't realise who he was either.

Just because you are a sports nut does not mean that asking who somone is is anyhing but an honest question addressed to someone who clearly does know!

So get off youtr 35 foot high horse!
The Holy Bible, probably the most diabolical work of fiction ever to be visited upon mankind.

The link in the OP covers who McIlvanney was.So it's not an honest question, it's a simple piece of ignorance.

I tend not to hit links until I am sure it is to something I am likely to be intersted in. Had it been Peter West or David CColeman, well, they are names I know!

But I should have known it would be me that was in the wrong!

Yep. Because if people can only post on what you know and are interested in it's going to be a bit restrictive. What would you have me do in this case?

See! I wasn't commenting on what you know - I was commenting upon what I DON'T KNOW!

I have the greatest respect for your knowledge which, obviously, is extensive - it is you way of commenting on the ignorance of others with which I take issue.

But let it pass, this is quite clearly a matter upon which thee and me are never going to agree, so let's just try and put up with each other and our little foibles eh?

Hugh and Willie were baith lads o pairts; Killie born and bred. Ayrshire seems to have no shortage of literary talent!
"for, as long as but a hundred of us remain alive, never will we on any conditions be brought under English rule. It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom - for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself."
