Cyril Smith and David Steel
« on: March 14, 2019, 02:03:35 PM »
This is filled with comments from Steel, that I read, and then think he cannot possibly have just said that so reread to find out that he did.

Yes, I read that several times, in order to take it in.    I wonder how easy it has been for other abusers to hide in plain sight.  We had one at my school, who simply moved to another school.
They were the footprints of a gigantic hound!

It just goes to show how readily people protect institutions against "scandal" - the reputation of the institution is more important than the damage done to individuals. We have seen this time and again with the RC Church - which even now is still struggling against the the need for openness.

That political parties should be seen in a similar way by their adherents is not really surprising - they are, after all, highly assailable belief systems. (Just look at Theresa May's continuing attempts to put the interests of the Conservative Party before those of the United Kingdom.)

Organisations believed they were protecting their good name.  I knew a teacher who was a housemaster in an independent school who systematically abused pubertal boys under his protection. He was told to go somewhere else and was given a good reference. About thirty years later he was convicted and jailed.

Agreed, and when you add into that Boris Johnson's crass and idiotic comments yesterday, I would suggest that it's wider than just being about political parties but is part of the whole system..

As Steel didn't out that pervert, Cyril Smith, one wonders if he has anything in his life he doesn't wish to be revealed?

I rather suspect it is more to constitute tribal loyalty covered by Harrowby Hall, and that abuse wasn't taken seriously. I am sure everyone has some things that they might not want revealed but your implication that Steel may have been involved in abuse himself here seems unwarranted.

I’m not at all surprised. Back in 1979 the attitude displayed by David Steele was pretty common.

I think it’s simply that he didn’t want the scandal that would befall the Liberal Party.

So you’re surprised that he admitted covering up a sex crime in 1979 rather than that he covered up the crime in the first place?

No, I'm surprised he said things like 'Of  course I disapproved but..' Which sounds as if he is still making the idea that  it wasn't that bad.

Steel says he thinks he would react in the same way today as he did in the past which is even more shocking. I hope he is prosecuted for withholding evidence. >:(

Not quite sure I'm getting this.

BBC reports that Steel claims that Smith had admitted that he had been investigated by the police with no action rather than that Smith had confirmed to Steel that he was actually an abuser.
Ah, but I was so much older then ... I'm younger than that now

OK. I understand.

I'm just not at all surprised. I was able to see that attitude first hand in that time period being expressed by people who I knew well and respected.

I am, however, disappointed that Steel took and still takes this attitude. I respected him as leader of the Libs.

So did we, especially as it was our party of choice. My husband and I are very shocked that we were taken in by that man. His attitude towards sexual abuse is disgusting! >:(

What do you mean by "taken in"? At the time he was leader, I don't recall Cyril Smith's crimes coming up.

Steel gave the impression he was a decent person, not one who would overlook a serious crime like child abuse.

In the circumstances that David Steel was faced with in 1979, I reckon a lot of people would have opted for the same choice that he did. I'm sorry to say that such child abuse wasn't taken very seriously back then.

If that is true it is not to their credit. In the 80s I reported someone we knew when his children of primary school age confided in me that they didn't like their Daddy getting into bed with them. They were taken off him and their mother given custody. Steel says he would probably not report it in this age and age, which is inexcusable! >:( >:(
