I was just thinking that given what's happening it would be good to have a PM in place and in charge, and then I thought of Johnson, and groaned. This is major tough diplomacy.

And still the protests continue and have a greater effect - there's not much that the UK govt can do but anything that they might is going to be easily ignored by the Chinese as we have too much else going on.

And still it continues - my wife is due to be there for 10 days next month and I have to admit to feeling a tad worried about it.

If this had happened a couple of months ago then it may well have been enough but it feels as if it is too late - the problem of the remaining demands is the free election one.

From people on the ground, there is ongoing technology blocks,  the police presence is added to by Chinese police and there is infiltration of various protest groups by Chinese secret police.

Students being brought back. And my wife was due to be there in a couple of weeks but it is looking like her company will hold off sending people.

It's odd, I wouldn't really have been worried as it's easy to avoid the protests but at the same time the question is what happens next. We're due there Feb/Mar for a couple of days holiday en route elsewhere.

The slow ratcheting up of the confrontations is quite scary. It gets harder to see how either side stops. Beginning to get worried for our friends there for the first time. While there are ongoing protests in Paris, which are little reported on, tyey have settled into a tempo unlike here.

Hong Kong is certainly not  a good place in which to live these days. Some years ago my youngest uncle and family lived there, he is a doctor, now retired. They must be very relieved they are now back in Switzerland.
