What was it doing off Gibraltar? Had it gone the long way round?

It was unable to go through the Suez Canal. It may be that Iran knew that it would be intercepted at the Suez Canal so chose to go the long way round the Cape of Good Hope.

That's what I thought must have happened, just that I couldn't find it anywhere online. It seems a bit strange that we are left in the dark about this.
