Bolsonaro and the Amazonian fires
« on: August 27, 2019, 05:41:39 PM »
Surprised to see that this topic has not been raised anywhere here - or have I missed something?

As far as I can see, the fires are a direct consequence of his overall policy towards the 'development' of the Amazonian jungle, and though he may not have given direct orders for such extensive jungle 'clearances', he has until recently shown little concern about the catastrophe that is developing. He is of course a climate change denier - what a surprise! (this ignorant ex-military thug is also a notorious misogynist and homophobe - how on earth could he have got elected?)

Naturally enough for a moron with no respect for science or the jungle inhabitants, he probably thinks that growing soya beans and oil-palms there is a sustainable proposition. Not that the businessmen who see the opportunity to get rich in the short term without caring a damn about future generations would be overly concerned about ecological matters, sustainable development and climate change.

It seems Bolsonaro may not have just caved in to international pressure (well done Macron for taking the lead). He may just have had a contingency plan, should the fires have got too far out of hand. For it seems that he had pre-recorded his message about sending in the military well before the world was alerted to the disaster. At the time of the broadcast, Bolsonaro appears to have been enjoying himself at a review show in the theatre. Anybody know any more about this?

There is a lot of smoke and mirrors here. Bolsonaro is obviously clever. But the whole 20m pledged here by the G7  is hardly in the league of what is promised to Notre Dame. Climate change is not seen as an emergency so Bolsonaro is validated.

And indeed here we have Bolsonaro using Notre Dame against France and Macron

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/brazil-amazon-fires-g7-aid-offer-bolsonaro-macron-summit-a9079831.html?fbclid=IwAR2YNnXYEgYhndNecXSNnY-XgdITykf6SQcW7qv-ghN1hDKwm0uJ3YrRxyA

A pretty cheap and unconvincing comparison. Bolsonaro has also criticised Macron for his 'colonialist' attitude. Insofar as the Amazon produces up to 20% of the world's oxygen, this is fuck all to do with colonialism, and altogether a matter of world concern.

However, Bolsonaro feels that scientific research and the facts revealed are such as he chooses to agree with. When one of his senior environmental advisers* gave him some scientific facts to consider which he didn't like - guess what - he sacked the adviser in question. What a surprise! Where Trump leads, other ignorant thugs are sure to follow.

I can't see any of it having much effect on his support. He was basically elected while saying stuff like this.

Indeed, as I saw pointed out elsewhere 20m is nothing in a world where the budget for a film like "Venom" is 100m.

I can't see it having a negative effect, but I can see it having an effect. There's a certain sort of confrontational nationalism in any number of countries that sees political leaders lashing out at foreign powers as some sort of strong-man diplomacy.

Agree, though I suppose it was ever thus - perhaps it's that it seems to be happening more in stable democracies than before?
