I don't think the Government should bail them out, it has better things on which to spend its limited amount of cash, imo.

and yet 8,000 jobs going isn't going to be 'free'. I think the govt needs to be involved in discussions and try and get a deal sorted. It's not a business that is strategic but the impact could be considerable.

I realise the impact could be considerable, but the Government can't take on every firm that is about to go bust.

Let me be quite clear about this I mean paying what they should under our current tax set up. Not by using dodgy schemes to off set their taxes or by moving companies off shore. Just pay your dues. Then maybe we could afford the NHS, an adequate police force, decent social services and yes even bail out companies that are struggling therefore saving ordinary people the worries that go with the threat of unemployment, or actual unemployment which when it happens is compounded by the lack of a basic social infrastructure and all that that implies.

All a bit academic now with administration taking place. Bailout was probably the wrong phrase, but it is not unknown for the government to help companies out of short/ mid term difficulties, most recent example being British Steel. Whether TC falls into that category I have no idea. Very sad situation though.

Thomas Cook were using brochures while their competitors were using barcodes.

They had a considerable amount of real estate on the High Street, too.

I don't understand how any mass market travel agent still exists. I, for example, haven't used one this century.

It would be a "moral hazard" to bail out Thomas Cook.

I can understand why the Government isn't keen on bailing out Thomas Cook - post-Brexit, demand for continental travel is likely to take a hit.  Having a player out of the market now means there are fewer potential significant failures after the fact which can be laid at their door.
