The world would be a better place without humans. Don't you think some people go into parenthood without thinking about it carefully enough?

Yes, I do sometimes think the rest of the world would be better off without us. There was an interesting documentary some years ago, called 'Life After People', with cgi video, of what would happen to the world if all humans suddenly disasppeared overnight. After 10,000 years, almost all traces of our presence would have disappeared, but the pyramids would still exist.

This week has been Orangutan Caring Week. I watched a documentary on BBC2 (?) about them. They share 97% of our gene pool (that might not be the correct term - in any case they are very closely related!) and despite the evident loving care given by the humans on the ground in Borneo (I think) I could not help but come to the conclusion that Orangutans would be much better off without humans. As a result of this programme I spent a fairly fruitless 2 hours in Sainsburys trying to avoid products without palm oil, or trying to find "sustainable palm oil" products.

Saw the same one, Trent, (I think it was Attenborough's 7 Continents) and immediately checked  all the food we have for sustainable palm oil. I should have known better before this, as I travelled to Sri Lanka birding some time ago, and passed mile after mile of oil palms in order to get to some small select birding areas. Thanks to Nearly for providing the list of sustainable palm oil products. I've downloaded it, and my wife and I fully intend to alter our shopping habits to suit. Obviously we realise that this is only a drop in the ocean, but, there again, drops make up an ocean.
