Inside Science - Quantum
« on: February 21, 2020, 05:55:02 AM »
Yesterday I heard the item on Inside Science where Adam Rutherford was talking to Sean Carrollabout quantum. Both are of course most interesting people to listen to, and there is apparently a half-hour extended interview available. I would be most grateful if someone here could please find the correct link which will take me to the interview. I do not know whether it is one of these 'podcasts' things, but that interview I'd really like to hear. Thank you.

Susan,

This is a link to a longer version of the broadcast (42 minutes rather than 30 minutes):

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m000fgns

You might be interested in the "Life Scientific" interview with Sean Carroll:

Many thanks for your help. I think the second link will be the one I'll go for first.

I tried the second link but did not hear words which seemed to indicate an interview with Sean Carroll by Adam Rutherford and I just wondered whether you could tell me, please,  whether the interview is audio or text and is it on that page or not? No rush for answer.

"The Life Scientific" is a weekly radio programme on BBC Radio 4 in which a scientist is in discussion about his or her work with Professor Jim Al-Khalili. The programme is available on BBC Sounds, which is the successor to BBC iPlayer Radio. You may need to register to get access to BBC Sounds.

Ah, right - thank you. The Tech chap will be here early March, so I'll get him to do that for me.

Both links are to program episodes - but they don't play automatically - when displayed in a browser there should be  a large "play" button to click to actually hear the broadcast.

There are other links to the podcasts, but there again you normally have to click play to hear them, or "download" to download an audio file.

The first link is to the Inside Science episode which has an extended interview between Adam and Sean Carroll at the end.

The second is to an interview by Jim Al-Khalili where Caroll talks about his career and work - definitely worth listening to imo.

HH may be right about needing to be registered with a BBC account, as they keep changing things because of the fuss about licenses.

Thank you - I shall definitely make sure I listen to both!

I have just clicked on that extended programme link and, yes, it does say I have to sign in.  I think I have a BBC account but do not know if it is on this new computer.

Indeed... but, for me, too many jokes and not enough science.

Carroll's popular science books are great - as physics without maths.

He also has his own podcast - inviting other people to present their thinking on various issues.

Yes - I find that a bit too  sometimes. I've usually just come in from swimming at that time, so only turn it on occasionally.

As we were discussing Adam Rutherford Radio 4 programmes, the short readings from his book "How to argue with a racist" deserve mention - although they will disappear from the BBC Sounds in a few weeks time.
