The big bang wasn't an explosion, which is a rapid expansion of materian in space. the "big bang" was a rapid expansion of space.

The Big Bang was also the start of this Universe. You could take it to mean "the biggest explosion since time began", although the journalist that wrote that headline probably meant it in the way you suggest.
