Yep, I feel that the whole leadership election may end up postponed as well.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was.

I can't see why, as it's done postally.

Because there is going to be a reduction in the chance of people meeting the candidates, because people may feel their ability to vote postally is affected if self isolating, because people might see the counting as involving risk, and because it might be seen as a distraction.

I think the main time for meeting candidates etc is over - that was when the constituencies were deciding on their nominations.

As this is all by post there is no reasonably argument for postponing the election. Given that the ballot papers would have been received before the end of Feb I imagine the vast majority will have already voted and returned their ballot papers as most people tend to vote pretty well straight away when they receive a postal ballot.

The new leader of the Labour Party is supposed to be announced on Saturday, I wonder if that will still go ahead?

Yes I think it will go ahead - albeit without everyone being in the same room. I'd heard that each candidate was asked to record an acceptance speech that would be used if they won - albeit I suspect there is no point in Nandy and Long-Bailey bothering.

It is also important that we have a new leader of the opposition in these very testing times. Corbyn, while remaining leader has no influence or authority anymore. A new leader will have authority and can then act appropriately as leader of the opposition - in the current circumstances, hopefully working closely with government through the current crisis where appropriate, but also providing necessary challenge to government actions and approaches where needed.

I think you mean "the new labour of the Labour Party".
Seriously though, folks, let's hope it's Keir, the leader from hell as far as the Tories are concerned.

Any Labour Party leader is going to struggle to make much impression for a long time. There is only one show in town

I understand where you are coming from, Steve, but I think that for this country to thrive, its legislative assembly should move away from the "yah-boo  we'll vote against you because we are the opposition" model to one which is more focussed on achieving the right result by rational argument.

For me, Keir Starmer's experience in a senior management role in the criminal justice system is just as important as his figurehead role in the House of Commons.
Does Magna Carta mean nothing to you? Did she die in vain?

I am pleased to see Keir Starmer is the new Labour leader, the Tories have more to fear from him as a potential PM than from the other two candidates, imo.

There's a Starmer waiting in the sky
He'd like to come and meet us
But he thinks he'd blow our minds
There's a Starmer waiting in the sky
He's told us not to blow it
Cause he knows it's all worthwhile...

Ed Milliband is now back in the shadow cabinet as business, energy and industry secretary.

I'm sure he'll conduct his business with energy and industry.

Not a labour person myself nor any of the others, but what I've seen and heard this Starmer bloke seems a reasonable choice for Labour minded people to take.

I won't insult him by comparing him to Corbyn in any way, that'd be an insult to just about anyone.
