Does it matter if somewhere is a real place as well as a place found in a fictional, legendary or mythological context? It is the location of that place in some unreal context that is important. Not its location ona map.

Is Gotham, a village to the south of Nottingham, really to be dismissed because it was the location of stories about villagers wanting to avoid the area being turned into a hunting park? If a legend takes place in in a real place, then the place becomes part of the legend anhence is "legendary". Legendary does not mean that a place doesn't exist. Of course, Gotham City does not exist.

Is Rupert Brooke's Grantchester really the same place as the village in Cambridgeshire? Or is it some idealised manifestation of that village and hence fictional?

Jericho - the one in the North of England around which a recent TV series was made.

I was thinking about places such as Gilead. Just because there is such a place doesn't mean there is not also a fictional place of same name. For example there are several Springfields but on this thread the Simpsons' town is the one that is meant.

OK - I suggest that the rule is that you can use a real place-name, as long as it's also the name of a SEPARATE fictional place: thus 'Gilead' is allowed, because the fictional one is not the real one, but 'Grantchester' isn't, because the TV series is set in the real Grantchester, not in a different, fictional one.

You completely missed my point.

I was concerned with the Grantchester of Rupert Brooke's poem. Is a real place graced with nymphs, fauns and satanic cries? And is there honey still for tea? To Brooke, in a foreign land, Granchester is somewhere conjured up in some kind of dream.

It may be a place on an Ordnance Survey map. It may be a place which road signs point to, which can be reached and visited. But in this case it is a fantasy in the mind of an exile.

As for the tv programme, I have never seen it.
