And in 2016's continuing musical cull, I see Maurice White has died. I suppose there is a simple numbers thing happening. There are greater numbers of known music artists reaching an age when death is common, and it is an improvement on 27.

Sometimes insomnia is a curse but at least when the alarm goes off later, I am simply getting ready to go on a plane for a weekend in one of my favourite cities, and to see some friends on a serendipitous Sunday.

This has nothing to do with that but followed as a recommendation from the last piece, and I heartily agree

In part because the favourite city to which the miracle of modern travel will take me is Paris, but also because it's a proper middle of the night piece of melancholy.

Vaguely considering a sort of guilty pleasures theme for my next few posts on here. I don't really subscribe to the idea anymore of feeling guilty about them but in the past, at the time I first liked they might not have been the 'correct' thing to like in terms of one's friends. This seems appropriate as it also references that yesterday was the anniversary of Karen Carpenter's death. When they were successful, I was meant to be somewhat angry and not keen on anodyne pablum,or some sort of similar teenage nonsense but she is a great emotive singer.

NS - I also think Karen Carpenter had a wonderful voice.

We are in good company:

One of the reasons why the concept of a guilty pleasure has less resonance with me than with some, is that I have always appreciated a well turned pop song. They don't have to be meaningful or imporatnt, and sometimes that is the charm. Some bands release little bundles of joy that everyone regards as being great, Haircut 100's Love Plus one falls in that category, and I've been to a few parties where people said  I don't care who knows it but I really like this' and played it.

This isn't Haircut 100, this is far worse in the realms of things you aren't supposed to like, but I've always found it well done - Life in the Big Apple by Kajagoogoo

Hi NS

Your link for the Carpenters takes me to somewhere else entirely for some reason - so I am using that as an excuse to post my all time favourite Carpenters track:

This was more about other people trying to make me feel guilty as a teenager of about 14 for owning an album of Marilyn Monroe singing. The charge which didn't bother me much then, and not at all now was that I was gay.

Following on from that, one was not meant to like musicals, and even back then not meant to like Lloyd Webber musicals, many of which I don't. But oddly of the Holy Trinity of musicals for me is thus one:

Of course the other thing I wasn't supposed to like at that age was disco, but I like dancing, and I am/was good at it, and despite what those at the same age thought, girls like boys who can dance. Of course a with many things that were looked down on, it has had a resurgence. I did think of putting a link to Chic but Niles Rodgers has always been cool (I recommend his autobiography)

I love that tune too  :D  BBC Four did a rather good evening of documentaries about ELO and Jeff Lynne a while back.

I have good memories of dancing to this with my son at a wedding a couple of summers back.  :)

Like NS I do enjoy dancing, although these days it tends to be restricted to my kitchen. No idea if I'm good or not but that's not the point. Not disco though. This.

Once had a discussion with Horsethorn about Blue Monday being the first proper goth single. True or not, if you've got your black eyeliner on and you want to shake your booty this is the one to do it to. Utter tosh, but good tosh. Needs to be played so loudly you fear for your hearing.
